Islands...if I describe what I'm looking for, can anyone suggest a destination please?!

Ds and I stayed on an island off the Queensland coast 2 years ago and it was the most amazing experience. We were talking about it earlier trying to work out why it was so amazing and whether we could find a similar place, closer to home...seems a bit extreme to fly to oz and ds wants a much shorter flight.
The reasons we loved the place:

  1. very quiet resort. One small aparthotel complex (and a small campsite).
  2. one restaurant
  3. one bar (which also served pub-type food
  4. reasonably quiet in the evenings
  5. very relaxed atmosphere
  6. very reasonably priced
  7. under an hour's boat transfer from the mainland. Does such a place exist? And if so, can we get there in under 6 hours?!

Hello :) there is a lovely island called Symi in Greece which sounds like what you are looking for. I went for a fortnight a few years ago and it was lovely and relaxing. Will definitely go back one day. I went with a company called Olympic holidays

Spetses - Greece (Though it has been a long time since I have been there!)

HiccupHaddockHorrendous · 24/06/2017 00:33

Fab, thanks! Will look it up now...just been looking at Croatian islands - there are so many!

Herm or Sark. No airports so you would need to fly to Guernsey and get a boat transfer. Might not be warm enough for what you're looking for though

I'd suggest you look at Sunvil's website. They specialise in the more off the beaten track places of Greece such as Kastellorizo, Lipsi, Ithaca or Tilos, all of which would probably suit. They go to Symi too. I went there 30 years ago. It is truly stunning but although evenings will be quieter, it does attract day trippers from Rhodes for a few hours in the middle of the day but you'd probably not be in the main village at that time of day. Outside peak season would be better . I'm thinking about going back in late September this year.

Thanks for the replies Flowers
Thingy - just had a look at herm and sark and both look like places I'd like to visit but maybe somewhere a little warmer for this trip.
Greece seems like a popular suggestion Grin
Island hopping is on my gap year midlife crisis list so maybe a week or two next year might give us a great introduction to the islands.
Ds will be sitting his GCSEs next year so for the first time in 12 years we can go during term time!!

Gozo - small island off the north coast of Malta, if you're not familiar. Marsalforn is the largest resort, which is still very quiet and relaxed but has quite a few restaurants and bars. There's also Xlendi, and others, which I think are smaller. look at www.visitgozo.com

Takes about 5/6 hours to get to there - you need to fly to Malta and then transfer by road for about 45 minutes, plus a half hour ferry trip and then a short transfer to wherever you are going.

Excellent pizza and pasta - food is very Italian influenced. You can get a big pizza and a beer for under 10 euros in most restaurants.

Or if you want very very quiet there is Comino, which is unihabited, even smaller and between Malta and Gozo. You can get a boat from either Malta or Gozo. There is a hotel and some self catering accomodation. There's also the blue lagoon which has loads of lunch places, not sure about evening restaurants - this might be limited to the hotel - I've only ever been for the day.

Caye Caulker off the coast of belize. there is also ambergris caye but that is quite a bit larger and there are lots of other smaller cayes (islands) off the coast as well. the snorkelling in this area is amazing.

it is more than 6hours though but honestly well worth it.

Lovely island off Dubrovnik which has no cars ... Lopud. We just went for the day, but it was so relaxing, I would go again in a heartbeat. Sounds like what you're looking for, with the added bonus of other great islands nearby to explore if you get bored.

Paros. 3 hour ferry or 49 min flight from Athens. Stay at Paros Philoxenia hotel near New Golden Beach. Family run hotel, super chilled, nice beach and pool.

AdaColeman · 24/06/2017 13:05

Alonnisos (Northern Sporades) fits your bill very well, though the journey time is a little longer than you would like.

paradoxicalInterruption · 24/06/2017 13:12

Friend went to Lopud, it sounded so lovely I really want to go, you can cycle round it and fantastic fish. V quiet.

Thanks for all the suggestions Flowers
I will add them to the list and get searching.

Santorini (one of the Cyclades islands.) Just beautiful & a small island.
Had one of our best holidays there & can't wait to revisit.

DropZoneOne · 24/06/2017 14:26

Ithaca, Greek island off the coast of Kefalonia.

There's some small islands off the coast of Sicily, the Aeolian islands) they might be suitable too.

specialsubject · 24/06/2017 16:33

Spetses and hydra in the Greek argolic gulf will do it, although the boat transfer from Piraeus is two hours or so.

Symi was a long time ago but was also lovely.

mrwalkensir · 24/06/2017 16:38

Scilly

mrwalkensir · 24/06/2017 16:39

although not necessarily cheap
