I love lying down holidays.

DH does not.

It's a moot point now that DD will be 4 when we go - where in Croatia would you recommend that we get a mix of sun and city break?

T'internet isn't being very helpful. Thank you!

One of the islands - Hvar / Korcula, then Dubrovnik. Handy ferry's in between!

Oh god sorry FERRYS, no apostrophe. Blush

Somewhere near Dubrovnik. We stayed on the Lapad peninsula, but loads of mumsnetters recommend Cavtat. The old town of Dubrovnik is a world heritage site, and rightly so, but if you stay a little outside it you can just lounge around. There are no sandy beaches in the area though. Croatia doesn't have many sandy beaches.

The istrian peninsula is easy to get around and has some great towns to visit BUT there are hardly any sandy beaches (we didn't find any and we were there twice) and my kids were bored at the beach. The littlest was 8 at the time. We went to Italy the next year & the kids had way more fun with a sandy beach

I'll go against the grain and say the islands near Split, then Split. Dubrovnik has been ruined by the cruise boats. Split is much more interesting. If you stay there, you can catch a bus to a nearby (rocky) beach and hire sunbeds for the day. Best of both worlds IMO.

Just had a fantastic half term break in Split so second that as well! Lots of history, great old town & nice beaches. Brac & Hvar are both do-able day trips & a regular Catamaran service runs in the summer. Food & alcohol & accomadation were all very reasonable!

The island of Korcula has two sandy beaches, we stayed in Lumbarda - walking distance to both beaches rather than in Korcula town. You could get boats to lots of other places from here, we had a car and stayed in few different places- Dubrovnik is a must see but so busy so I'm glad we just did one night, I also preferred Spilt, we loved our time there and nearby Trogir was also nice.

To add - we were with a 2 and 4 year old and it is very family friendly and we also found eating out etc very reasonable. I'm getting upset we're going somewhere else this year!
