Can anyone recommend any good hotels/apartments for 10 days in Sydney (northern beaches?) and then 10 days in the Whitsundays (Heron Island?). Thanks

Iluka Resort Apartments at Palm Beach look nice, but I can't find any reviews. If you want to be a bit further in the Manly Paradise Apartments get a good review on Tripadvisor.com

We spent 10 great days in Sydney at New Year - after much searching found Parkridge Corporate Apartments, very central right next to Hyde Park, bus stop for beaches opposite as well as grocery shop. Prices were up due to New Year/Ashes when we visited but might be worth a check. Its such a child-friendly city - you'll have a great time.

We stayed in a beautiful house near Palm Beach in November (google Careel Palms) which we booked directly with the owners. Nearby Whale Beach was amazing and we hired a boat nearby and beach hopped over on the Pittswater side for DS2's 8th birthday. There are lots of amazing beaches nearby (the ocean beaches have enclosed pools as the surf is really too strong for small children), Avalon village is really funky and there was a lovely pizza place on the main road about 5 mins away. You do need a car though.

Thanks all ! How far is it by bus / public transport from Palm Beach into Sydney itself?

Have stayed in the Whitsundays and Heron Island but Heron Island is further south (mind you, this was all pre-kids). Do you mean Hamilton Island? If so we stayed in the main hotel there but I think there were family apartments there too and the whole place seemed very geared towards familes & kids. We also stayed on Long Island - the resort there was far more basic but in a nice way and there was plenty for kids to do.

Hayman Island is more expensive & exclusive but supposed to be very nice.
