Is Castelldefels handy for a Barcelona city holiday?

I have apparently left it too late to book accommodation as we can't even afford the hostel prices in Barcelona city centre!

How easy is it to get public transport from Castelldefels to the city?

There is a train from Castelldefels into Barcelona, it takes about 25 minutes, I am not sure how often they run but you could find a timetable on the internet.
