as flying to Bordeaux and hiring a car seems sooooooooooo much more preferable that spending 2 days getting to our mate's house

Hi again Enid
To make your life more difficult, in France, you are not allowed 5 people in one hotel room for Health and Safety. So, you will need to get 2 rooms. Worth getting inter-connecting rooms.
Assume you want cheap and cheerful???
We have found Premiere Classe to be cheapest and they will give you connecting rooms if you ask.
In Orleans, we use Premiere Classe Orleans la Chapelle. In Calais, we have used the Suitehotel and the Ibis in the Cité Europe area. It all depends when you are going really as they are getting very booked up.
Let me know if I can help more!

well as we are not paying for the actual holiday as such we thought we'd try and stay somewhere characterful off the peage, don't mind paying a bit more for it

One of the lowcost companies does flights to Rodez and somewhere in the Dordogne, as well as Carcassonne. Ryanair, I think. All within 2 hours drive of Cahors. And surely less than 900 quid even with car hire incl seats.
Or, depending on when you're going, I could maybe lend you a travel cot. Will be in the area around Easter...
