Traveling with-in the UK With a Baby, Passport required?

My boyfriend made a comment about how he would love to go to spend Christmas In Ireland one year and was just looking into it. By that time, I will have a 6 month old baby who would be coming with us.

Neither of us have passports but I know you don't need a passport when traveling within the United Kingdom, We both have photo ID though,So, We will probably just go to Belfast or somewhere.

Obviously the baby wouldn't have Photo ID, So would he need a passport? Sorry if this is a random question, just wondered if anyone knew before I start contacting people as Im only thinking about this trip at the moment, Not actually planning it.
Thanks.

Ireland or Northern Ireland? There's a difference...

You won't need ID for Northern Ireland (which is in the UK)

For Ireland you will need photo ID, but I genuinely don't know about baby.
