Overnight train with car

Apparently this exists, but I'm struggling to navigate the websites. Has anyone done this? Do you pay separately for the car? Are roof racks ok? Any advice? Looking to go to Italy, not sure how far train goes, probably planning to get train to Austria and stAy for a few nights then drive the rest. Does this seem reasonable?

Seat61 is your friend, unfortunately services have been cut in recent years. You'll need to drive to Dusseldorf

There's also a car train to the South of France. You could drive to Italy from there.

euro is it the same link for South of France?

there used to be a car train from s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands and several from Düsseldorf to italy. and you can get the car train from paris to nice as pp said, but you cannot travel with the car - you need to get a day train and spend the night in paris or nice, then pick up your car the following day.
