London travel with child - need Oystercard?

I'm coming to London with my 7 year old soon. According to the TfL website, she doesn't need to have an Oyster Card of her own if she's travelling with me as this age group travel for free. But does that work in practice with the barriers..? Any advice welcome :)

No oystercard needed on the tube or bus under 11. Most stations have a wide gate for people with luggage and children. If you go through that one, when you swipe your card to open the gate you will both be able to get through.

Great, thanks! I suspected as much but didn't want to get caught out!
