will be staying a couple of nights so looking to get rail/tube passess for 3 days? We'll be staying at a place where we could train or tube in.

The Oyster card is pretty cheap, and will automatically move you to a travelcard day pass thing if you travel enough in a day. Works on buses, tubes, and some train lines (not many though).

Where are you staying?

But you will need to supply a photo and pay £2.50 (?) for the card. Still quite a bit cheaper though I think. there's a oyster website somehwhere.

No photo needed for Oyster card. You do have to pay for the card, though, it's a £3 deposit.

Kids under 12 (I think?) travel free on buses all the time, and free on tubes except for before 9:30 am on weekdays. Trains cost generally.

You don't need a photo for an oystercard unless you have a monthly or longer ticket

Oyster is cheaper than cash fares

I find the oystercard website totally confusing . We'll be in Zone 3 and I think I need to get oyster cards for all of us. It says you can get a refund on anything you haven't used? I suspect we'll be on a travelcard on 2 or 3 days so are they cheaper with an oyster card or is it not worth the fuss? And can I get the combined tube and boat tickets on them?

Last time we visited we just bought travelcards, although I think we paid more than we should have for the kids (over 12 under 16) as they travelled with us.

It appears they still do 3 day travelcards this

It may be easiest to ask at the ticket office on your first day there

The system with the tube and boat works with any travelcard or oystercard. You just ask for a boat ticket with "travelcard discount" and wave your card at them and they give you 30% off.
