Girona with young children?

We are thinking of visiting Barcelona first then staying somewhere near Girona. Does anyone have any recommendations?

We went to Girona 2 years ago (flew straight there on easyJet, didn't get to Barcelona though in hindsight we should have).

Girona itself was great - small but lots to see, easy to walk about, restaurants etc and not v touristy. We stayed in Hotel Peninsula. The city is big on cycling too. Then we stayed for a week just outside Besalu which was nice though mainly sat by pool. Then we spent last few nights on Costa brava which was busy but fun and very pretty. Hope that helps!
