Stopovers flying to Melbourne

We are thinking of visiting a friend in Melbourne during the Easter holidays next year. We will be travelling with ds, who will then be 23 months. Any advice on where to look for flights? And where could we stopover? Totally inexperienced in looking for flights like this!

We flew with Cathay Pacific and stopped in Hong Kong. We only had a layover rather than an over-night stop, but we still had time to pop into the city.

Absolutely Singapore. We stopped a day and used the hotel on site but would love to have stopped longer. They do a free tour of Singapore if you're there more than asomething like 8 hours, the airport itself has beautiful gardens and a rooftop swimming pool. Singapore is amazing. We just did the free tour but would love to go back properly. Definitely Singapore :)

Also really really rate Singapore Airlines - they were amazing with a toddler. You can choose any combination of food (puree/weaning/solid food for toddler / Asian/veggie etc) and they will serve you separately to the child so you can help them eat. They have little lunchboxes for the children and lots of snacks. Really good stewards every time we've flown.
