i went to crete last year on the north coast was really nice and had a bit of breeze which was great as my little boy was two and half and has very fair skin and auburn (ginger but i prefer auburn lol) hair!

StrawberrySnowflakes · 05/02/2007 12:48

were in crete was it? and when did you go?..we're prob looking about may-june so its not too hot as our main concern about cyprus in aug was the heat(40degrees!)

beckyeliza72 · 05/02/2007 13:05

yeah it was in Platanias, Rethymnon north west crete. depends wot u like though, i went with my parents and my 80 year old nan, i;m 34 and was single at the time, there were a lot of resturants there and shops etc and my little boy was up fairly late most nights. i had a good time!

beckyeliza72 · 05/02/2007 13:05

who have u booked yr hol with then?

StrawberrySnowflakes · 05/02/2007 16:15

through thomas cook but with olympic and they only do cyprus, greece, bulgaria(?!) and domincan rebulblic(been there, but n good with dd!)..dp like the look of is it santorini??..the place with all the white buildings that everyone photographs, but that looks too 'historical' for dd..i want beaches and fun esp as we will(if we do change) be on our own

OP posts:
lurkylou · 05/02/2007 18:51

if it is just you and your partner go for Santorini - very romantic and also very chic in places - ideal for couples not families!!!

StrawberrySnowflakes · 05/02/2007 19:23

no, it'll be me, dp and dd who will be 4..so beaches and cheesy family pubs!..shame they dont do benidorm

I have been to Halkidiki for the past 3 years running with my best friend and our kids. The beaches are lovely and clean (they have blue flags) and it was nice and quiet in the resorts but with plenty for the kids to do in the hotels. The Sani resort is lovely, but expensive, but I would recommend Halkidiki as a whole (and I'm a fussy cow!!!)

StrawberrySnowflakes · 05/02/2007 19:34

thanks..ill have a look at those two from you both

Thassos is lovely, so is Lefkas and Skiathos.

We went to Rhodes last September with a 2 yera old and 5 year old. We loved it. We stayed at the Aldemar Royal Paradise hotel and it was fabulous. Lots of pools, water slide, right on the beach, playground etc. The kids club was open but empty at that time of year so we didn't use it. There was a bus stop right outside that took you into Rhodes town which was nice to walk around as its a medieval town with loads of ruins which my 5 year old loved. There was even a soft play area right across the street from the hotel that didn't cost much. The hotel also had a spa if you like that sort of thing.

Can't recommend it enough really!

StrawberrySnowflakes · 06/02/2007 10:19

sounds nice, i thought about rhodes, but thought it was more 'historical' like you mentioned, but if there are nice beaches etc too??..thanks

Rhodes town itself is very historical and no beaches as such. But most of the resorts are outside the town. The one we stayed in was not really far from the town (maybe 10 minutes drive?) but that made a huge difference. It was all beaches and resorty rather than towny if you see what I mean.

I forgot to mentionn, there is also a massive water park about 10 minutes drive from that hotel (away from Rhodes town) which was totally amazing with a whole children's area tht my kids loved.

I suppose what I liked was that we were able to combine the resort bech type kids holiday with a slightly more grown up historical side depending on what we wanted that day.

StrawberrySnowflakes · 06/02/2007 19:43

yeah i agree on both being of interest as dp and i would like to look around as long as dd didnt winge too much..sounds lovely!

strawberrysnowflakes, dh and i went to Zante a few years back too and thought it was lovely. We didn't take dd at the time as we wanted a lovely break away, just the two of us, but kept thinking 'oh, it would've been ideal for dd here'.
Lagana, only a short ride away was where the young 'uns hung out .. i'd hate to think it's spread to Zante now.
I remember from Zante we took a free bus ride to Vassilikas(SP) Beach and it was lovely there, with water sports, beach volleyball etc.

StrawberrySnowflakes · 06/02/2007 20:38

we actually stayed in lagana and at the time(1996)..god ten years ago now, oh my god i am soooooo old!..anyway.. it was fab, even would have been happy taking dd'then' (she wasnt even a twinkle then!), but think its a bit more clubby/gangs partying now isnt it?...beaches once you walked a bit were lovely, closer in were full of tab ends even then

Skiathos is a great place for kids - we have been twice now. Thassos - not been for a long time, but again, lots of young families there.

mythumbelinas · 06/02/2007 21:02

We went to Zante 4 yrs ago and it was still very peaceful then .. mainly hotels, shops and restaurants.
Our hotel (very clean and family-run) had a children's play area, paddling pool, table tennis, bar with sky tv, outdoor seating for the restaurant/breakfast and a short walk away from the beach, which had turtles at certain times of the year.
We only walked or hired bikes. Only went to Lagana once, which was full of bars and clubs. Once went, by taxi, to the town centre. Also, once took the cruise around the island stopping off at Smugglers Cave Beach.
If it's still like that, i'd definitely want to take my dd's there.
We booked via Thomas Cook at the time.

StrawberrySnowflakes · 06/02/2007 21:05

yeah, we walked along the beach to see the turtles..and took the very dodgy catamaran trip round to smugglers cover....aaaaaahhhh, i loved it there..but also we drank cocktails every night and this wont be happening this time!..so no pink panther bar!
