Sofia, Bulgaria

DH has to go to a jolly conference in Sofia and partners are invited. I reckon I may as well go - we thought we'd stay a couple of days extra after the conference finishes. Given that I'll have a couple of days on my own, can anyone recommend good places for me to visit? I'm thinking I may have to join escorted tours for safety and to avoid getting lost. We'll be staying near the centre.

Sofia is beautiful, but then so is the rest of the country - maybe even more so.

I rode through Bulgaria in the Summer and it is an amazing place - certainly not somewhere I felt any more “at risk” than being in the UK. Was travelling alone, by motorbike.

Head down to Veliko Tarnovo for a couple of nights. Sofia was underwhelming when I was there (although it was 10 years ago!) but VT was absolutely lovely. And it's safe, no need for escorted tours as long as you are sensible.
