Hello - quick one, why not try the A&O Hostel? Lovely double rooms with MASSIVE PILLOWS and cheaper than hotels. Just hitting and running here as I'm out and about xx

We stayed in an A&O hostel in Berlin - dp had stayed in the hostel bit on a stag do previously, and liked it so much we stayed there when we went back as a family - clean, comfy family room which was a big hit with all of us.

We stayed at the Adina aparthotel a couple of years ago and it was great, very central to city centre, harbour, Reeperbahn etc. Handy supermarket close by too.

I always stay with family but a friend stayed here last year for a visit to the Christmas Market

The areas around the main station (Hauptbahnhof)/St. Georg and Reeperbahn can be seedy and is the red light district.

Definately go to the Landungsbrücken, you can do boat tours through the harbour. In the Speicherstadt, the old dock warehouses, there is a spice museum and -if you have any train mad family member - the Miniatur Wunderland, a miniature train set up like no other. Ballinstadt is an immigration museum, how people lived temporarily before they went on to immigrate to America.

The main tube/train network is great and brings you around easily. For shopping the Mönkebergstrasse and Gänseplatz, Jungfernstieg are the main shopping areas and in walking distance to the Hauptbahnhof and they all have tube stations.

Walk around the Alster, the vast lake in the middle of inner Hamburg. If the weather is great Planten un Bloomen is the botanical garden.

Thanks for all the responses, we booked somewhere that looked nice, fortunately no cancellation fee because we found out through looking more that it is in a really seedy area, prostitutes, drug addicts etc ....still searching
