Excess baggage

hi,

i'm flying to the canaries tomorrow and my suitcase weighs a tonne - I'm travelling on my own with my 6 mo dd and what is in my case is mainly for her, nappies, formula, few small toys etc.

has anyone ever been charged excess baggage, looking at the website they say they charge £5.50 per extra kilo. At the moment there's still 10 flight seats left on the flight, does anyone know if they will definitely charge me excess baggage if they still have spare seats left??

Are you allowed 2 cases per person? If so, I'd try to split the contents into two smaller/lighter bags. IME, they'll definitely charge. You may get lucky, but I doubt it.

You'd be surprised how much you can pack within your allowance. Can you not plan to buy nappies there? Things like pushchairs, car seats and travel cot are sometimes carried free anyway.

Does the infant get a baggage allowance? Make sure you include that, but check if they allow you to "pool" the baggage allowance.

Don't know how heavy the bag is, but don't forget that they won't take ANY bag over a certain weight (usually 32kg I think). Baggage handlers won't take overweight items.

Would you be able to take just some formula and buy the rest there? You might not be able to get your usual brand, but a 6 month old probably won't mind.

my hand luggage is already large (i've been really cautious and packed enough just incase we get delayed) so cant fit anything else in there either.

only allowed 1 piece of luggage for both of us with a weight allowance of 20 kg.

Hassle when you're carrying a child, alone, but if they allow you to take say, 10kg on as hand baggage then use it!

not sure how available her formula would be out there as she's on SMA LF, which you can only get in Boots and Lloyds chemist here.

Lighten up on anything you can buy there then...

no single item can be more than 32kg on any flight, most now say 23kgs. Health and safety reason (luggage handlers wont lift it). They may make you repack at airport. I would go online and check before you turn up. Your dd should get a small allownce anyway.

You should put it on bathroom scales. Satnd holding it and deduct your weight, If you cant lift it..i would consider it too heavy.

Have a nice trip

I often see people whose bags are refused or made to pay. The on flight bag size is bigger now than in the summer though so make use of that allowance. At Gatwick I was handed a leaflet last weekend on new smaller weights coming in in February by the way as I was 22 kg or something (with BA). Amusingly the arugment that the handlers can't handle it disappears into thin air when you read that if you're in club class the allowance is heavier - presumably their muscles suddenly spring from no where.

Cost us £60 flying to Spain with BA on our last holiday in May. My Husband blew his top as the holiday cost an arm and a leg anyway. Telling one of the Mom's at my daughter's school. She told me that she got stung for £100 last summer and had just bought a hand held gadget that you can use to weigh your luggage yourself. Seen it, thought it was brilliant. Cost £30 so I am ready for the summer hols and is worth it just so I don't get anymore ear bendings from my Husband. I ordered it from www.weighitup.co.uk I hope that this will help.
