I would STRONGLY recommend never buying a new car .. buy one that's a year or so old.. you'll get far more for your money .. a car loses so much money when you drive it off the forecourt .. its unbelievable ... and what for?

try network Q .. you can give them a spec and see what they come up with

have a look at whatcar.com

I bought a Hyundai Getz, it was the 1.1 CDX in black, cost £7000 + my 10 year old Ford Fiesta (worthless) as a trade in. Comes with aircon, powersteering, abs, edb, 5 drs, electric front and rear windows. Got 5 years warrantee, 3 years/30000 miles free servicing and 3 years RAC cover for free.
Need to shop around and don't take the window price.
I never thought I would ever buy a new car, but the price I bought this one, I could only have bought a 3 year old Fiesta and it wouldn't have been as well equipped. The car has done 6000 miles so far and runs beautifully. Can highly recommend.
Forget the Panda, horrible body roll on roundabouts and has electric power steering so no feedback to think of. Citroen C2 was like a tractor to drive, very heavy. The Ford you will pay over the odds for a crap spec. Swift supposed to be a good buy. Don't know about the Skoda Brava, but it is built by the VW group, so (jokes aside) build quality will be good.

There is a guy in the Daily Telegraph on a saturday who has a dear John column about cars. He is excellent and I think there is a link to his web site on the telegraph web site, have a look at what he has to say.

Honest John - he is a real bloke and if you email him, with your budget and requirements, he'll make some suggestions.

You can put your makes and models into his car-by-car index and read what's good/bad.

You should have a look at a Honda Jazz
