Wow this is one of my ultimate dreams. I am water crazy and at my happiest with a mask on and underwater. I have come across a shark when snorkelling over a reef in Belize, but nothing large and magestic like a basking shark.

My friends have come across a basking shark while surfing in cornwall

Did you see that amazing program on tv this week about the woman who freedives? can't remember her name now. Will look it up. It was superb. I am in awe of her freedive achievements.

aDad · 28/01/2007 09:47

Tanya Streeter was her name. My hero! (heroine I guess)

I know the woman you mean, I think she had a series on diving round the world over the last few weeks. Caught a couple of the programmes. She is amazing. Thanks for her name, will google her now!

i have only seen the one, but she went freediving in the Galapagos, the blue hole in Belize, and other spots. Came across humpback whales, swam with penguins, plenty of sharks, played games with seals. Terrific viewing.

I hope the series isn't over!

Hey littlelapin, thanks for that link. Looks interesting. I did have the Bahamas in mind though .
I got to say the night dive sounds terrifying, I would want a cage for that!!

now that is a lot of sharks!

happynewme · 28/01/2007 10:21

Wow! Thats the one!! Thats like the one i have seen you go down, sit on your knees in a large circle and then one goes in the middle in puts the food out.. and in the come.
I am due a payout from work as have had very nasty time there (you may have seen on another thread)... so do I pay a chunk off mortgage or do I swim with sharks. The later of course!!

Happynewme, we did the Disney version, where me and ds (aged 5) snorkelled with sharks. Only baby ones, but still, maybe doesn't put me up for the mother of the year award.

I really wanted to do this in South Africa, and I believe that they have some of the best sites.

worleygig · 28/01/2007 11:10

if you want to see basking sharks we have them off the coast in east anglia too. they come right up in to the harbour, my dad used to build the offshore platoforms and all the men used to stand on the top of them and watch them swimming in the harbour.
it has completly put me off swimming in our sea, ever scince i was a little girl (long time ago) along with weaver fish etc etc...

HAhaha L-lapin, never thought of it like that but so true!! That trip in Oz sounds fab. Whereabouts did you do it? I went to Oz some 7 years ago now backpacking/working visa and got to say am very annoyed with myself that i didn't make the most of it.

Matey - my DSaged 4 definately does not want to join me!!

What time of year do you get to see them worleygig.. not that i would fancy jumping in but would be great to see.

Done this off Tahiti (Huahine), with white tip sharks up to two metres in length. Also scuba dived the Great Barrier Reef, and saw lots of small reef sharks, as well as many other amazing things.

I think Egypt is one of the best places to dive and I think you can see sharks there.
