Well,it might not be obvious but a holiday in and around Arles in Provence would be fab.
So much of this stuff to see and do-temples,arenas,aqueducts.

My sister lived there for years.
It is wonderful.

I hope this isn't a really stupid suggestion and that I haven't totally missed the point but Rome itself is absolutely fantastic. You could be there for ages and not get bored. And v romantic for a honeymoon. No suggestions for doing it cheap though - dh and I went a long time ago, ie before children.

Pompeii and Herculaneum are really fantastic (not good for small kids with buggies though)

Or you could go to the Neapolitan Riviera. You could then see Pompei and Paestum and places, but with the added advantage of being on a stunning piece of coastline so you could alternate sight-seeing with relaxing on the beach. You could also take in the cave-houses at Matera, perhaps....

No specific ideas, though, sorry.

Great minds, Tiggerish!

South of Italy would be warmish (pleasant rather than sizzling, though). Sicily might be a bit warmer. Do the remains have to be Roman? Would Greek do? (Was thinking of Greek ruins in Sicily, but come to think of it Greece would be good for that kind of thing, wouldn't it?)

, but am Italy-obsessed!
