Hope no-one minds if I start another thread as the old one is full?

Or are you all in Orlando now? Smile

We're going in April 2017. Staying on site. No free DDP as it's the easter hols. Wondering if it's worth paying for DDP? We would like to do some character dining. Cinderellas table, chef mickeys, poss breakfast at crystal palace maybe something else though I need to research which different characters appear at other venues.

Anyone have any views on whether it would be better value for money to buy DDP or to pay as we go? I'm leaning towards buying a DDP.

Hulababy · 10/09/2016 20:20

We've been the space centre on 3 or 4 visits. We love the place. Definitely an easy day trip form Orlando.

Hulababy · 10/09/2016 20:21

He launch experience was nothing like as intense as I'd imagined. Didn't feel nauseous or anything. Was fairly tame TBH.

PoptartPoptart · 10/09/2016 20:41

Thanks hulababy, I'll give it a go!

2014newme · 10/09/2016 21:02

I didn't do launch experience but my young kids did and dh. They enjoyed it, it's just a simulator ride.

ChestyNut · 11/09/2016 10:04

moonhare from what I've read on various forums it's not worth paying for the DDP.

Crystal palace is great and if you can get an 8 am slot you get to see a nearly empty park. We got some great photos in front of the castle 😊

Hulababy · 11/09/2016 11:04

Re the DDP

I have never used it before and always pay as we go. However it is included with our next booking, so will be using it and have already booked all our ADRs for the week (we don't go tim February) including character meals, the Royal table, Be Our Guest, etc.

There are a few DDP calculators to use to work out if you are likely to save money, such as this one:

www.distripplanner.com

Don't forget that DDP does not include tips (other than Royal Table I think) and doesn't include alcoholic drinks. They are two courses, not three also. And any children with a child's DDP MUST eat from the children's menu.

2014newme · 11/09/2016 15:57

We had the deluxe dining plan had some good meals but tips at 20% do add up

MoonHare · 11/09/2016 16:38

Hulababy Thanks so much for that link just spent a few minutes running options through it and we would definitely save with QSDP no matter what, then if we ate TS for just 7 evening meals (one of them being Mama Melrose for Fantasmic) then the DDP also works out cheaper for us.

So, on balance and to take away the daily fretting about spends I think it's worth us purchasing the DDP. The calculator really is a very useful tool!!!

FiveHoursSleep · 12/09/2016 16:14

We've just booked 3 weeks in Orlando thanks to the BA flights+car sale.
We have 4 kids, so it's always been at least 5.5K just to fly but we managed to get flight and car for £2700 in August 2017.
Our kids will be from 9-15 year but are still pretty excited.
We still have to get park tickets and accommodation and would like to stay in the park for at least some time.
Does anyone know if we should book Disney hotels NOW, or do they have deals as the time gets closer?

Oblomov16 · 13/09/2016 08:15

Wonder if anyone can help a complete Florida novice.

Have been to US quite a few times, but never to Florida. Planning for 2018. Ds's will be 14 and 9. The 3 of us like very scary rides (Dh does not) and waterparks. Dh will just lie in the sun, whilst we go on all the watersides, so this could work perfectly (Dh has a bad knee).

We will probably go for 2 weeks. But we haven't even decided when! May 2018? Is that better than August, when it would be too hot. Dh wants to go for 3 weeks, but I think he's kidding, we can't afford it. (We are saving for this through his work scheme savings thing which is very fruitful!!)

I don't know if I should just book 2 week passes for the parks? Upgrade to fast passes?

Dh likes shopping and is planning on taking an almost empty suitcase! I like shopping too, as does ds1. We do have some ideas of shopping days, but I also need to check out all the outlet villages, and shopping suggestions.

Is there a website/video that can I start with? Showing all the best bits. I think we are more universal than Disney.
My bil has a villa, but is it a real holiday fur me if I'm cooking and cleaning? One week in hotel and one on villa?
I went onto DIBB, but it's too individual thread, and I need general advice.

Do I want Disney dining? I doubt it? Dh and I will want to eat at good restaurants with steak and lobster.

I'm confused. I'm completely bamboozled. Don't know if I should try booking it myself. Or let Virgin book it all.

I read all your restaurant views and they sound yummy, and I want to take advantage of your knowledge, but I just don't know where to start.

What do you think I should do for starters? I need a step by step programme!
Please be gentle, I have read many of the MN threads but I just get more and more confused.

2014newme · 13/09/2016 09:35

Step one check prices for the different times of year, villa or hotel, 2 or 3 weeks.
Those factors will have an impact on your decisions. Dibb can be useful for all of these.
Get a good guidebook preferably one for British and again useful advice there.

MerricatsHouse · 13/09/2016 14:01

Oblo we usually go in May - the weather is great (around 85 but with a breeze, not too humid), not much rain and not overcrowded. We always go the first 2 weeks and have never queued for more than 20 mins on anything (and only used Fast Pass for one ride). However May is good BEFORE Memorial Day as then the American schools break up soon after and it is very busy that weekend. I haven't been in August (DH has and said it was bonkers crowds-wise), but I've been in July and the heat / crowds / thunderstorms were more heavy-duty.

It sounds like you would benefit from a travel agent if you have never been before, there is a ton of information out there and it can get pretty overwhelming (I'm still mind-boggled by all the info and I've been going for 20 years, Disney Dining Plan has meant hours of research). I booked with Virgin, as did some others upthread and they have been very good. If you wait until next April-ish and book a Disney hotel then it's likely they will have the Free Disney Dining promotion available. We are going in May 2017 and it came out at the end of April, it has saved us a ton of money, though wouldn't have paid for it I don't think.

If you like big coasters then Universal and maybe Busch Gardens would be worth a look too. Agree with PP who said buy a guidebook - I always buy the Brit Guide as it came highly recommended, and it does have a British slant on the info so is helpful with travelling info too:

www.amazon.co.uk/Brit-Guide-Orlando-2017/dp/0572046286/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1473770689&sr=1-1&keywords=the+brit+guide+to+orlando+2017

Blogs I have found useful for planning and info are:
allears.net/
www.disneyfoodblog.com/
www.disneytouristblog.com/
From those you will get a ton more links for good sites, and they are more post orientated than forums - I struggled with The Dibb layout too.

You sound like you have an idea of the activities you want to do, really first things first is deciding on a budget. This helps decide what kind of accommodation you can look at and when you are going. Then talking to a travel agent and getting a few different prices might be the best thing. You don't have to book with them, but knowing where you stand will be invaluable before planning. Hotel vs Villa is completely a case of what you can see yourself minding doing if you go self catering and whether you prefer the space or get annoyed by tidying up etc. I adore hotels but depending on budget I can see how a nice villa might be preferable to a cheaper hotel (I have done the very cheap hotel Florida trip and it was OK but we were students and overlooked a lot at that age!).

Oblomov16 · 13/09/2016 14:25

That you both. Especially Merri. You are of course right. I just need to be systematic in my approach.
I will buy a guide, do some research, then approach a couple of travel agents first. Just to get some more concrete ideas. Then I'll come back and review all the MN threads for recommendations, at the latter stages.

Errr, why did I need you to tell me that? Blush numpty. But thank you. You have started me off on the process and I sincerely appreciate that, because I seemed unable to get started on my own.

MerylPeril · 13/09/2016 18:56

Can I join - we go back in May and stay at old key west

I've started planning my meals again today (can't book till November) were on the dining plan.

DD can't eat gluten so it's really amazing eating there.

Any of the people been this year got any new tips?!?!

Hulababy · 14/09/2016 19:09

May 2018? Is that better than August, when it would be too hot.

May will be a lovely temperature. We normally go August (or Feb) and it is hot and humid. Manageable but May will be more pleasant.

I don't know if I should just book 2 week passes for the parks? Upgrade to fast passes?

We always have two week passes for the parks - it is the same price for 14 days as it is for 7.
Disney FastPass - you don't pay for.
Universal Express - quite expensive and possibly not even need it in May if term time. We've only had them once and never in the summer and been fine - sometimes an air conditioned or fanned queue is a nice rest! Cant use them for Harry Potter either. Id wait till you got there - you can get them on the day if need be.

Dh likes shopping and is planning on taking an almost empty suitcase! I like shopping too, as does ds1. We do have some ideas of shopping days, but I also need to check out all the outlet villages, and shopping suggestions.

Too big malls in that area, plus a couple of outlets. All similar tbh.

Is there a website/video that can I start with? Showing all the best bits. I think we are more universal than Disney.

Both universal and Disney have their own websites.
Also use sites such as The Dibb, WDWMagic, etc and DD is obsessed with You Tube videos - you can experience all the rides and shows in detail - Into The Magic, Tim Tracker, etc.

My bil has a villa, but is it a real holiday fur me if I'm cooking and cleaning? One week in hotel and one on villa?

We normally stay in a villa if going for two weeks. We don't cook and clean though. We have breakfast in the villa - toast, eggs, cereal maybe and all washing goes in the dishwasher. Use the big supermarkets to stock up inc juice and bottles of water. We eat in the parks the rest of the time though may have the odd meal on the 192 or I4 roads - Dennys, Perkins, etc. If we have a day in we get a pizza and/or donut takeaway.

I went onto DIBB, but it's too individual thread, and I need general advice.

It can be - use once you know what you are doing.

Do I want Disney dining? I doubt it? Dh and I will want to eat at good restaurants with steak and lobster.

I'm confused. I'm completely bamboozled. Don't know if I should try booking it myself. Or let Virgin book it all.

We;ve done both. Sometimes a package can work out cheaper, when staying in a hotel, sometimes its cheaper to do it separately. We look at both every time and it varies. This time we've booked direct with WDW.
However, if staying in a villa, you'd be better sorting it separately - we normally fly with Virgin Atlantic direct.
Don't get park tickets through them - they are dearer. We buy Disney ones direct from WDW website, and Universal from an official authorised ticket agent, one that is for the Uk market and offered real actual tickets.

I read all your restaurant views and they sound yummy, and I want to take advantage of your knowledge, but I just don't know where to start.

Don't worry too much about this until it is booked and you are closer to the ADR date. That is the date you can book Advanced Dining Reservations - 180 days before you go.

What do you think I should do for starters? I need a step by step programme!

Decide first - May or August

Then decide - villa or hotel

If villa - book relatives (you mention it)
Then book flights - I'd choose direct wherever possible. Either airport (Orlando or Sanford) are fine. Orlando is bigger, Sanford slightly further out but not far

If hotel - look at holiday companies, WDW website or individual.

You don't need to worry about getting tickets for parks etc. for a little while yet. There's no real rush for them.

Also, get a WDW website account set up. Add your names and birthdates, etc. You can then use it to keep a plan of where you want to go, etc later on.

LucasNorthsTwiglets · 14/09/2016 22:47

Hi, all! We've just got back from 3 weeks there and it was amaaaaazing and now I have post-Orlando blues :( We are planning on Summer 2018 but man, that seems a long time away!

Merricat, it was some time ago that you posted this but:

We added tickets for Universal but are kind of regretting it now - DH and I really want to see the Harry Potter stuff as we missed it last time (pre-kids), but I don't think our 4 year old son is going to get anything out of it. He's not into HP yet and most of the rides will be too big for him (even stuff like the Minions ride). The rides there are more full on so tend to have bigger height requirements than Disney. A 9 year old might love it though, depending on how into intense rides they are. There is superhero stuff there but it will be disappearing as the Marvel licenses move over to Disney.

I think there will be loads that your 4yo can do in Universal and Islands of Adventure! They may have more big rides but there is an awful lot else for them too. The Minions ride has stationary seating so he can defintiely do that. Then there's ET, Spiderman, Men In Black, Simpsons, a couple of Dumbo-type rides, 2 or 3 fabulous water-play areas, a couple of kiddie rides and the whole Seuss landing section! The superhero stuff won't disappear from Universal, btw - it's a very complicated contract but basically Universal (in Florida only) have lifelong rights to the characters which are in the park now. Disney will be adding more Marvel bits but they can't use any characters which are at Universal at the moment.

MerricatsHouse · 15/09/2016 09:26

Thanks for the info Lucas - totally sympathize with post Orlando blues! Am already planning the next one after this one despite not knowing where the dough will come from Confused I have looked into Universal a bit more recently and realised there is a lot more he can do than I first thought.

Showed him a YouTube video of Jurassic Park ride last night and he is desperate to go on it - turns out if he can grow another 2 inches before May then he can. I am a bit apprehensive that the drop might freak him out but he's a bit of a daredevil. He saw the video of the Incredible Hulk coaster and is furious he can't go on it till he's about 9 Hmm . Going to try and introduce the idea of Harry Potter just so he can enjoy the wandering round bits. At least it looks like we will get better value out of the tickets now, plus he can drag DH on all the superhero stuff and I can go and sit and watch the world go by or wander around Harry Potter World in peace

MerricatsHouse · 15/09/2016 09:30

Good luck with getting started Oblo - come back and share your plans / ideas when you can! I love to hear what other people are planning on doing, it makes waiting for Orlando seem not such hard work!

LucasNorthsTwiglets · 15/09/2016 09:52

I am a bit apprehensive that the drop might freak him out but he's a bit of a daredevil.

I hate drops but this one isn't as bad as Splash Mountain, imo. How anyone can want to go on Hulk is beyond me! My 8yo did it this year and loved it - but he's a crazy person :D

Oblomov16 · 15/09/2016 12:07

Hulababy, thank you so much for answering all my points, one by one. I really appreciate that, and your advice.

And thanks Merricat. I am much more clear now.

I am much clearer about what to do, in what order now. thanks for sorting me 'right' out!! Wink

Hulababy · 15/09/2016 12:55

Universal has hanged quite a lot over the years and there is now plenty to do for little ones in both parks.

The 4y will probably love the train to start with.

MerricatsHouse · 15/09/2016 13:02

Smile For some reason outdoor rollercoasters scare me more, but I do love them anyway. The Hulk is great, and Rip Ride Rockit good too but the 90 degree slow climb to the top was terrifying! I reckon DS is the daredevil he is because DH spent so much time throwing him up and dropping him down when he was a baby to prepare him for Tower of Terror! They still do it and the crazy kid always laughs like a drain.

Have only been on Jurassic Park a couple of times but apparently it's the biggest drop in Florida! It was the biggest in the world when it was built too (can you tell I've been in a rollercoaster Wiki wormhole?!). Been on Splash Mountain so many times now it's like riding a bike but it was always the mini-drop inside in the dark that got me EVERY TIME.

Hulababy · 15/09/2016 17:51

I didn't realise the JP drop is the biggest over there - doesn't feel very big.

I am not so keen on the water rides - hate having wet pants afterwards! Love coasters though, mind you the vertical rise at the start of Rockit still gets me!

LucasNorthsTwiglets · 20/09/2016 08:11

Have only been on Jurassic Park a couple of times but apparently it's the biggest drop in Florida!

Wow, I just Googled to see the difference and you're right - Splash Mountain is 50ft but Jurassic Park is 85ft! I'm amazed by that... Splash feels so much worse! Perhaps it's to do with the drop angle (or it's just my imagination :) )
