Hope no-one minds if I start another thread as the old one is full?

Or are you all in Orlando now? Smile

We (2 adults, 4yo & 6yo) go in April 2017. New to this thread...looking forward to reading your top tips!

I'm exhausted reading what goes into some of these holidays and I still insist the best way to do Disney is without children 😂

It's what me and my brother and his wife do. We go alone. Three middle aged people every second year for two weeks day in and day out. Though this year my friend is coming along for her 60th birthday.

Disney hotels? Well I found them to be a soulless experience so we always stay in an apartment complex 10 minutes from the park.

Park restaurants? It's just fast food - tidied up a bit if you're at what's considered one of the better restaurants. We don't eat it apart from something light if we're in one of the parks at lunch time. So again there's something to be said for staying off site and sorting your meals out yourself - and It doesn't mean you have to be tied to the kitchen sink in holiday.

Shopping? Keep in mind that a lot of the stuff found in the outlet malls are specially made outlet mall ranges and the reason why do much of it looks like rubbish.

I'm gong again in just under 4 weeks. Miami for a nosey around, a Caribbean Cruise to get my strength up for a dance with Goofy - then Ddney here we come.

Have a great time guys 😊

Villa or hotel depends on what you do / don't mind doing IMO PrincessIrene . I think villas are maybe cheaper (?) if you'd need more than one hotel room and more room to move around if you have a few kids. I've done it both ways and wouldn't do villa again. We made the switch to staying in Disney hotels and would never do anything else now as we enjoy the perks. But I am not one for self-catering trips anyway as I want a break from housework / cooking when on holidays. You can eat out of course but I just like having my bed made for me every day Grin Hotels are my treat thing, so that's just a personal preference. Disney hotels have lots of perks to make up for the extra expense (they are more expensive though there are deals) and most of them are really well themed. If you don't want to hire a car there is the transport network etc and extra magic hours / having your shopping shipped back to your resort, all sorts of things. I find it good value even though it may cost a bit more; it can be quite an intense holiday activity-wise and some of the perks just make it a bit easier. Also if you book at the right time (and stay at Disney) you can get free Disney Dining Plan, which we have had for the first time this booking and it's going to save us A LOT of money on food.

We added tickets for Universal but are kind of regretting it now - DH and I really want to see the Harry Potter stuff as we missed it last time (pre-kids), but I don't think our 4 year old son is going to get anything out of it. He's not into HP yet and most of the rides will be too big for him (even stuff like the Minions ride). The rides there are more full on so tend to have bigger height requirements than Disney. A 9 year old might love it though, depending on how into intense rides they are. There is superhero stuff there but it will be disappearing as the Marvel licenses move over to Disney. There will be superhero stuff built at Disney parks, but it will take a number of years, same with expanding the Star Wars parts.

We are stuck with the tickets now but for our next trip (when DS is 5) we are probably going to skip Universal and either do Legoland or spend extra days at the water parks. Maybe we can shoehorn him into HP before then and he will be interested but I am anticipating DH and I carting a bored kid around Diagon Alley in a buggy and having to do the big rides as Single Riders!

There's a ton of options, but they are all pretty great and 3 kids are going to love it regardless! We have been a lot and have never done the level of planning that I'm doing this time and it's always been wonderful. So many people will have their own 'best' ways of doing it that they love, really the considerations are personal ones : budget, amount of space, convenience, how much you want to get done.

Woah that was an essay! Apologies for such a long post!

Lily15 · 06/08/2016 00:23

Just booked for April 2017..before that was May 2015. And April 2012 before that. 3 times since having our 3 DCs( boy, girl, girl )They were 8, 3 turned 4 there and 11 months the first time. They will be 13, 8 and 5 next year- each trip has been different based on their ages and what they loved at the time. So more Univeral and less meeting Disney princesses :)

ChippyMinton · 06/08/2016 09:09

Exciting! My trip is all booked. As it's the DC first trip, and only a week, we are doing Disney, with Kennedy and maybe an airboat trip.
I raided primarni for t-shirts for the big reveal. Planning to do it in a few days, so the DC can decide what dining reservations they fancy before our booking window opens.

We are going at Christmas and are beyond excited, have looked on the DIBB and now feel quite unorganised.

ChippyMinton · 07/08/2016 08:04

I know what you mean! Are you staying on site or off site?

2 days until we go! I think I'm all sorted. My last niggle was trying to get a Beaches & Cream reservation at a decent time and a cancellation came through this morning so I don't I have any planning left to do. Grin

WhoisLucasHood · 07/08/2016 17:36

Noofly, exciting! We go tomorrow, I've spent today packing and pampering. I know I've forgotten something..
We're heading to Disney Springs when we arrive to hopefully pick up our tickets and buy some magicbands, fancy trying TRex or Rainforest Cafe for dinner. Any recommendations?

Noofly · 07/08/2016 19:54

Ha ha, we might walk past each other in the parks! Grin We've eaten at the T-Rex Cafe. It was fun (DC were 5 & 8 at the time). The food was one level up from fast food but big portions and absolutely fine.

Have you been on allears.net to look at menus? There are loads of brand new places in Disney Springs. For quick food, lots of people like Wolfgang Puck Express (we went one year but it was just after we'd landed and checked into the hotel and I was exhausted so don't remember anything about it!)

BaconAndAvocado · 07/08/2016 21:51

Howdy all!

Glad this thread is back Smile

We've booked for August 2017, 3 weeks and a 3 day Disney cruise, I am beyond excited Grin

Only 364 days to go.....

NicknameUsed · 07/08/2016 22:09

We are at the Rainforest Cafe a couple of weeks ago. We just turned up without reservations and had a 20 minute wait.

The food was very good, but we found the place extremely noisy. There are fake thunderstorms and other OTT "Rainforest" noises. Any children with sensory issues might find it a bit much.

MerricatsHouse · 08/08/2016 13:19

Any advice on what it's like in Disney with a 4 year old - what they enjoy, stuff to make sure we see / do ? We have been lots of times but only as teenagers / adults and have never had to look at it kid-wise before. Very excited but would be happy to hear any specific tips. I think I have all the practical bases covered (such as having a buggy, take an afternoon rest) but am ready to be educated please!

GandolfBold · 08/08/2016 13:37

We are staying at Mystic Dunes, but are doing a night at Universal so that we can get the express passes to do the Hogwarts Express.

DD is very excited about the possibility of seeing Kung Fu Panda. Can anyone confirm there is something at Universal?

NicknameUsed · 08/08/2016 17:54

I don't recall that there was Gandolf, although we weren't looking for it. We stayed at the Cabana Bay which didn't entitle us to express passes, but it wasn't a problem because the shuttle bus ran until 2 am and we often went in the evening to catch up on anything we might have missed.

Hulababy · 08/08/2016 17:57

Back from Disneyland California. Was fab - much smaller scale, with less bigger rides but great fun all the same.

Florida is now 194 days away - a fortnight time then we try and book some ADRs. We have DDP for the first time too.

Hulababy · 08/08/2016 18:00

MerricatsHouse - we took DD at 4y (and 2y) but that is a few years back. My nephew is 3y and they have recently come back.

DD loved it and went on as many rides as she was actually allowed, adored the parades and fireworks, loved meeting the characters, loved the shows. Nephew also had a great time - he is a little more wary of things but my mid was through first week he was fine and the crowds and noises bothered him a lot less.

Is there anything in particular you would like to know?

LunaLoveg00d · 08/08/2016 18:06

Merricats we did Disney Florida with a 4 year old in 2012. My youngest was 4 about 3 weeks before we travelled. He was able to do nearly all of the rides, except the very big ones like Expedition Everest and the Rock and Roller Coaster. He loved the park experience, the look of wonder on his wee face the first time we went round "It's a Small World" was worth every penny. His favourite rides were probably the Toy Story one in Hollywood studios and practically everything in the Magic Kingdom - magic carpets, big thunder railroad, the splash mountain thing, pirates of hte caribbean, etc etc etc.

One thing we did find though was that he really struggled with the walking, even at 4. The older kids were fine but a combination of lots of walking and the heat meant we were in Walmart after 2 days buying a basic stroller. Would advise taking one with you if you have one (some villas also supply strollers) because even if your 4 year old is walking everywhere in the Uk that might change in Orlando!

Thank you :)

divafever99 · 09/08/2016 12:07

Glad I found this thread, we are booked for next year. Will have a read of this later for tips.

MerricatsHouse · 09/08/2016 13:28

Thanks Hula and Luna - I don't think there was anything specific I wanted to know but it's good to hear they love all the rides at that age - my DS is a bit of a daredevil so I was assuming he would like Splash Mountain et al but didn't want him to go on one ride and be freaked out for the rest! But sounds like he will love it, I can't wait to see his face. I'm guessing they love the characters - did they want to collect autographs / do pin trading or is that a bit old for 4?

Just realised though - I am going to have to go on It's a Small World again aren't I?? Hmm

MerricatsHouse · 09/08/2016 13:30

Oh maybe a bit specific - is there anything the 4YO will want to do that I will definitely have to Fast Pass? Obviously the new Frozen ride but anything else kids love that I might not think of?

EeylopsOwlEmporium · 09/08/2016 16:06

Can I join in? Me and my sister are planning Florida for 10 nights in march 2018. We've got nothing booked yet but have just read all the previous threads and think we need to get started! We don't really mind when we go, but don't want the parks too crowded and don't want it baking hot and humid so thought March would be best. I've noticed that Easter is 1st April that year so is that going to rule march out for crowds and cost? When would you all recommend? And when do we need to start booking things for best prices? We're planning to stay on International Drive and don't want a hire car.
