Um that's it really. Ideally not super-expensive, but doesn't have to be rock-bottom either. Has anyone had a wonderful experience with child-adoring hosts and trustworthy babysitting?

not a clue re babysitting but our staple is the Holiday Inn Express at Old St - book well in advance and it's about £50 a room (double with sofabed) inc unlimited buffet breakfast, which is stupidly cheap for London.

Thanks MrsB, that's amazingly cheap! Is it nice (i.e. clean, not too smelly or noisy, reasonably comfortable etc.)?

tis clean and reasonably comfy, make sure you request room up high and not facing street for maximum quiet (the corner ones are the best).
Gets more expensive the later you book but have never paid more than £80.

It's not especially handy for the west end theatres / shows etc though so depends where you need to be - there's another one (same price, same facilities) at Pimlico and another near Earls Court but I've not used either.
