Internet access Europe

I was wondering if the hive mind has any suggestions regarding mobile internet access in Europe.

I am taking my 4 year old on the road in August and would like us to have Internet access in the van at night.
I've done some very unhelpful googling.
So can anyone give me some ideas of where to look for dongles or phone plans

I have a 3 contract and get pretty good coverage but the speed is often a lot slower than I get in the UK. I think roaming contracts often aren't set up for streaming, more for checking emails and facebook

Ok that's promising, I'm not worried about streaming but want to be able to look stuff up, do research, book tickets, find directions etc.
Is you contract based in uk?

After hours of searching last summer I discovered that you can buy a Wi-Fi pay as you go thing for about 30 quid. It comes with a SIM card that you top up as and when. You charge it up the same you as you would a phone and then disconnect put it in your handbag Smile Bingo!

Ours was vodafone but some other networks might do them too.

I would try and use free Wi-Fi in cafes as much as you can. Data roaming in Europe is terribly expensive.
