Baby seat on bike

Does anyone know how old a baby has to be before they can go in a child seat on the back on a bike? Is it just when they can hold their head steady? I suppose they'd need strong necks to support the helmet?

I cycled until the day before DS was born and I'm really missing it now - but obviously don't want to take DS on bike too early, he's 4 months.

1st one suggests from 6 mths but the second looks like more like 1 year unless you get one of those trailer things

somewhere I've got a link to a Dutch gadget that lets you put a carseat on the rear carrier, but generally it's 6mo for a normal seat

Wow those trailers look cool - bit pricey though! Think I'll have to wait until he's a bit older and put him in child seat.

Thanks for your help.

found it! - this one takes a Primo Viaggio, and there's a good article about it here

This one is all in Dutch so you'd need to run it through Babelfish, and takes a Maxi-Cosi.

We got a Co-Pilot for dd when she was about 6 months which is excellant they are about £100, found it hard to get a helmet small enough though, ended up with 2 hats on under it which helps it from slipping down. My dd found it highly amusing to pull my kickers up as in a wedgie while cycling along.

I'm looking at getting a bike trailer on ebay and they are a lot cheaper on there than in the shops! Although, was in halfords the other day andf they had one that was 1/3 off, but still £80...
