Family holiday with four dcs ranging from 11 to 4.

We need a good family holiday. Is Mexico safe?

We're looking at the Playacar area south of Cancun, looks touristy but nice enough. We're getting quotes from Virgin Holidays, cheaper than ee expected.

Cancun

I didn't enjoy Mexico and wouldn't return.

Moon Palace is lovely, I have taken my children and we did all of the sights, it was fab.

Been twice with children and had wonderful time, first time age 6 and then again age 7. We stayed near Tulum which in my opinion is much nicer than cancun area. Loads to do, snorkelling with turtles at akumal, cenotes, wildlife, eco parks, stunning Mayan ruins, zip wiring through the jungle etc. for wildlife, nature, fantastic beaches and adventure experiences it's great.
We stayed a few days in New York on way it's only a three hour flight.

I have heard good things about moon palace but we prefer smaller resorts. If I wanted large though I think it's the best one.

Xel-ha park is fantastic.

Trips and activities and excursions are very expensive generally.

Yes it's safe completely, well organised, great roads, efficient not what you would expect but as the USA is number one customer base standards are high. The troubled part of Mexico is a three day car journey away. You are perfectly safe in the holiday Caribbean resorts.

CheeseAtFourpence · 29/12/2015 08:37

We have stayed in the Mayan Riviera which I think is much nicer than the Cancun area - but you would be safe in any of the tourist areas.

Yes riviera maya is lovely

Most of Mexico is too dangerous for me to consider taking my son to but I would be happy to take him to the Yucatan/riviera maya. Playa del Carmen is lovely. There's lots of great things for older kids to do around there.

Yes the east coast (cancun area) is perfectly safe. We are off next week for the 4th time and this time taking 2&3 year old too.

I'd avoid cancun (bit more party destination) and go 30-60 mins south to the Riviera Maya (region) and Playa Del Carman (town)

I absolutely love Mexico. The people are so friendly and kind and service is always amazing. The weather helps too of course ;) I've been in October twice and July and this time January. It's always brilliant.

Agree with posters saying to avoid Cancun, it's really over-commercialised. Think Florida in Mexico eg Hooter's bars.

I loved Playacar & the Mayan Riviera - a great mix of beautiful beaches, great snorkelling, ancient sites, plenty to do. Very safe, good all inclusive resorts, water parks etc.

We went to Puerto Vallarta in October and despite getting caught up in Hurricane Patricia ( didn't affect us much in the end!) we had a FANTASTIC holiday. Stayed at the Riu Palace and it was lovely. Great hotel, lovely staff- so helpful friendly and kind.
Spotless hotel too. Right on the beach. Puerto Vallarta lovely too. Did an all inclusive deal. Would thoroughly recommend it.

Have also stayed at Moon Palace in Cancun about 10 years ago and loved it!
