Doubletree Suites by Hilton is good if you don't want to all stay in the same room.

The Beacon is great. You can get a small suite for a really reasonable price so more space for family plus small kitchenette. It's close to Central Park and the subway. Rooms in NY can be tiny and hotels really pricey for what you get but this is good. There's a fab food market opposite and you feel like you're in a proper neighbourhood but still close to everything.

I was also going to suggest the Doubletree guest suites as well. The Salisbury House Hotel on W57th is nice too.

Avoid any listings on airbnb or other such sites; short term apartment lets in NYC are illegal.

Definitely want a hotel not an apartment.
