Backpacking in India and South East Asia?

I wonder if any experienced mother would recommend the best time to take a baby/ toddler around India and South East Asia for a year.
I've heard different opinions: the younger the better or when they can walk, etc.
I've done backpacking before and I'd like to continue. I thought I could combine being a mum and a traveller before it's time to join primary school...
HELP!

I have been to Asia and India but not with my children! But I'd say a good time would be while you are breastfeeding when baby is still very portable and you have less worries about hygiene if b/f, worst time would be in that mobile crawling phase when they get into everything. Good luck, what a great idea

Babies are much easier to travel with than toddlers. we did backpacking with just the one, it was fairly easy.

Now we have 3 we go nowhere much and are waiting til the youngest is at least 4 and able to walk without whingeing, carry a little backpack, not use nappies, etc.

One thing that would concern me would be not being able to have vaccines or malaria tablets.

Oh I'd love to go backpacking around with dd! If I could just afford the flight I would probably go... [smie]
