Train to French Alps?

Hi

Has anyone any experience of getting the train to the French Alps? I think you can go direct from St Pancras now (overnight), or change in Paris/Lille.

We live in Bristol, so would have to get to London first, but would save DH driving (we often drive down to the Alps) and get us closer than the plane (we need to get to Moutiers) and then a taxi/shuttle to the resort.

We have 2 DC, one train mad, both pretty well travelled, so am not too worried about how they might find it. Just would be interested in any experiences, costs, downsides etc.

Thanks

Have you investigated driving to Paris and then putting you and the car on the train? My bosses did it this summer and loved it!

The Eurostar and TGV are brilliant - modern and comfortable. DH and I go to France a lot (to see family and friends) and we always go by train when we can.

You can go from London to Grenoble by train. There are direct trains from London to Lyon, where you change to get a train to Grenoble. If there isn't a London-Lyon train that suits you, you could change in Lille, which is easier than Paris because it's the same station (in Paris you'd have to get the metro or a taxi between stations).

If you have the time and inclination, Lyon is a great place to spend a night or two. Fantastic restaurants!

You can book direct at www.eurostar.com or voyages-sncf.com. There's also www.loco2.com.

Just found this - there is a Eurostar Ski Train which goes direct from London to Meribel on Saturdays during the ski season.
