Taxis at Gatwick

I'm going away soon, flight is due to get back in the evening just too late for the last train back from Gatwick. It will be cheaper taking a taxi back home than staying overnight in a hotel, so I think that's what I'll do.

What I'm wondering is: would it be cheaper arranging for a taxi local to where we live to meet me, or to pick one up at Gatwick? I'm wondering whether taxis operating directly from the airport load the fares. Does anyone have any experience?

I would ask a local company for a quote and if it seems reasonable book in advance. They will almost certainly be cheaper and you will have peace of mind .

Yes the ones for the airport add at least 20% for the privilege. But I think you may find there is a fee for those picking up too. Gatwick Express trains run all night and local until well after midnight so am a bit surprised you will miss last train.

Arrange one, the ones just at gatwick are double/ triple the price as they know people have to use them during the night

belfry taxis - reigate / redhill are reasonable.

take the Gatwick express somewhere reasonably out of the airport and get a taxi from there. or at least get a quote as you might find it a lot cheaper.

Definitely book a taxi. Gatwick express does not run all night, costs a bomb, and only goes to Victoria.

Thanks all, I'll look at local bookings. When I looked up the trains on London Transport's journey planner it said the last train out was around 10 minutes after the plane lands, but it may have been taking into account the fact that I would have to change trains to get to my home station. I suspect a taxi from Victoria would cost at least much as one from Gatwick.
