I'm toying with the idea of taking a short break in NY maybe not next year might be the year after so that dd2 is older. But just for a general idea, can anyone recommend a good hotel to stay in that doesn't cost the earth, is fairly central and will accomdate 2 children?

thanks

The Alex.

service is ropey but the suites are fantastic. same price as a room in some of the more upmarket hotels

I stayed at the Sofitel on 46th and 5th a few weeks ago with my 8 year old dd. check out tripadvisor for comments on it(it gets the ~1 rating in the whole of new york). it was absolutely great - very central, very safe, BIG rooms for NY, incredibly quiet and clean, fabulous views, and really comfy beds.
HIGHLY recommended.
they often do deals on the price - check the sofitel website itself or expedia.co.uk.

We stayed in the 3030 in Manhatten. 2 blocks from the Empire State Building. Was about 4 years ago but was ok. Sort of a lage travelodge. We took our DD who was 8 months at the time.

alex didn't have any availability the days I was there.

I must say the Sofitel is better if you just want a (big) room - Alex better if you want self-catering facilities. I'd probably choose the Sofitel over the Alex otherwise because the location is better....

the Sofitel looks lovely, but only gives me the option of 1 child when looking at availability.

The Alex looks nice also and I've not checked out 3030 yet.

it's good to get ideas, by the looks of the prices we'll need to start saving hard.

phone them - they do big twin rooms that you can get a pull-out bed in as well (they call it a cot - as opposed to what we call a cot for a baby which they call a crib...)

if it is two adults and two children you want then they may also do a room with two queen sized beds in it or maybe the alex would work better.

Check out the Avalon Hotel - it's a couple of blocks from ESB. We stayed there at half term with our 7 year old DD.

We had a junior suite with 2 queen beds btw.

the affinia manhattan has suites with kitchettes and is cheap and central the staff were lovely but the rooms a little old fashioned

Salisbury Hotel on W 57th street is good and is also in a good location.
