Accommodation suggestions for Rome in February

We are 2 adults and 4 children looking for budget accommodation in/near Rome in February. We are open to most ideas: house swap (we live in Vienna); holiday flat; place on the outskirts (as long as it is within easy reach of public transport), etc. As long as the place we stay is clean, we don't need the 'hotel' to be a major part of the holiday experience. Any suggestions?

A convent? That's where we stayed when I went on a class trip at age 13. There was tons of food, I remember.

Hmmmm. I actually stayed in a convent there as well when I was 19. The rooms were filled with beds... I wonder where I could find information about this possibility.

We did self catering last Dec but the place wouldn't be big enough for you. Try searching for advice on www.tripadvisor.com, that's where I found good recommendations for the apartment we used.

Youth Hostel? Some have family suites or similar.

By the way I live in Vienna too , ds is 4.

Thanks lapsedrunner! I will check into those options.

One of our DSs is 4 as well. This trip is really for him because he is really looking forward to a night in a couchette. It is nearly all he has talked about since we arrived in July. Was yours born here?

Bit of a thread hijack here, DS was born in UK and then we moved here when he was 5 months.

He loves going on a "sleeping train" as he call them. We have used the Vienna-Dusseldorf Autozug service twice in both directions to shorten the drive to UK or France.

No need to worry about the hijack since it is me that started the thread...

Autozug sounds like a fabulour idea as well! We have many people to visit in the UK and having the van might be easier. Thanks for the help.

I have a close friend who is actually "Roman" & her family still keeps a flat ready & waiting in Rome. I will ask her for you if you like.

Oh! Yes please. We are going from Feb 19-24.
