My advice: don't go

nailpolish · 24/11/2006 16:42

the Patio is a decent hotel

so dh says. here is the website

nailpolish · 24/11/2006 16:43

one night in aberdeen is enough, btw

FIMBO · 24/11/2006 16:43

Take your winter woolies.

suedonim · 24/11/2006 16:47

Expat It's known as Scaberdeen in our house.

Time4me, if you'll be hiring a car, the Ardoe House Hotel is v nice, or the Marcliffe at Pitfodels. I'm not sure about city centre hotels - the Thistle on Union Terrace is central as is the Caledonian but I've never been to either.

Shopping is not bad and the museum/art gallery and Maritime Museum are all central. Old Aberdeen and the university area are nice to walk round (depends on time of year, of course!). Lots of golf courses around, too. Hth and have a good stay.

pointydog · 24/11/2006 17:43

My mum and dad have stayed at the Patio recently too. Said it was nice - don't know about 'lovely' but check it out. Right on The Beach. Bloody cold but can be dramatic.

Can't believe you buggers are commiserating about Aberdeen - she's wona competition!

You have a nice break time4me

time4me · 25/11/2006 13:34

Thanks for the tips -I`ll be chasing them up!

Also look up the Hilton Tree Tops. Stayed there when my sister graduated - also quite a few years ago.

bananaloaf · 25/11/2006 14:59

marcliffe in nice as is ardoe house both a bit away from the airport. there are smaller hotel in aberdeen city. the council webite is www. aberdeencity.gov.uk which should give links to hotels. Some will have pick up vehicles at the airport.

bananaloaf · 25/11/2006 15:00

mellowma - hill still there! hasnt yet fallen to the bastion of Stewart Milne builders!

suedonim · 25/11/2006 20:30

You will have a nice time, Time4me, there's plenty to do. I'm allowed to be rude about Aberdeen because I live nearby.

bananaloaf · 25/11/2006 20:42

zephyrcat · 25/11/2006 20:44

suedonim · 25/11/2006 21:16

Not that I'm aware of, Bananaloaf, but I currently live in Nigeria so am not really in the loop.

time4me · 02/12/2006 15:44

Ahemmmm Naily - I was born in Aberdeen and I think it is a lovely city!!!!!

SarahOxon · 07/12/2006 20:39

Hi, used to go to school in Aberdeen and married someone from west of the city (beautiful countryside by the way). If I was you I would hire a car and go out west towards Banchory (Tor na Coile Hotel nice) but if not you can get out of the city to nearby Cults and stay at the Marcliffe at Pitfodels (as others have recommended). I stayed there recently for a wedding and found it very nice, friendly and gorgeous food. Also has a health and beauty wing. If you don't have a car there are continuous buses along the North Deeside Road (which runs along the bottom of the hotel's drive) and they take 10 mins to get into the city.

time4me · 11/12/2006 21:33

Thank you Sarahoxon.Just wish we had more time!

Aberdeen is one of THE best cities in the UK. It sparkles in the sun, the granite buildings especially up near the Castlegate end of Union Street are just beautiful. It has wonderful parks, Duthie Park, Westburn, Hazlehead, Seaton to name but a few, a lovely beach with excellent facilities there, a boardwalk, funfair, cinema, cosmic bowling etc. I go back home to visit and have stayed at Patio which I would recommend, Thainstone House hotel and Ardoe house are also very nice. Royal Deeside is on your doorstep, there is Archeolink and Storybook glen(although some of these things are for summer) Science Museum, Funky Forest and Coco's play areas, excellent restaurants.....God I wish I lived back there, you only truly appreciate a place when you move away and I am in grotty Yorkshire and it cant be much worse than here...

Have a great time!!

time4me · 13/12/2006 20:54

Scotsliz your comment really cheered me,bless you.
I am totally exhausted and drowning in Christmas,I can`t wait for this one night break.
Thank you,thank you

Aberdeen was great! Thank you so much for all the time and trouble that you went to in replying. The highlight was old Aberdeen and visiting the Cathedral.Patio was very comfortable and a lovely spa .Beautiful city,so clean. We went for a walk along the beach which was bracing.Aberdeen people lovely-one thing I noticed is that they are very attractive but not full of themselves, very friendly and very decent.
Ryan Air was brilliant, very effecient and ultra clean. Will go with Ryan Air again.
All in all, a great weekend and lovely memories of a truly beautiful City-want to go again soon FOR LONGER !

Glad you had a great time!

merlotmama · 03/02/2007 00:24

time4me, glad you had a great time. I was wondering how you would find the Patio. We stayed there some years ago and it was fine but recently it has had some terrible reviews on sites like Tripadvisor.

Can I hijack this thread now time4me doesn't need it anymore? We need somewhere to stay at the beginning of March and I was wondering about the Copthorne as it is handy for the theatre. Anyone know anything about it?

Also, where should we go to eat before the theatre? Not too dear and handy for His Majesty's.
