Suggestions for a couple of days away alone

DH had a 3 day break earlier in the year and I've got my turn in the next couple of months.
He went with his mates but I will be travelling alone.
I don't want to fly. Happy to drive or go by train.
I don't want to be in the middle of nowhere. A pretty town with nice shops, galleries, cafes.
Where do you suggest?

On the mainline and lots to wander around

nmg85 · 04/08/2015 16:40

York is nice as well. or Berwick

SunnyL · 04/08/2015 16:42

Edinburgh? Just not in August as its probably all fully booked

MegBusset · 04/08/2015 16:46

Norwich, Cambridge or London!

Alfabetibisgeti · 04/08/2015 19:43

2 votes for Cambridge!
I had toyed with the idea of Oxford but will look at that too.
I'm in Scotland just outside Edinburgh so probably not, but Edinburgh is a fab place for a visit Wink
Went to Bath last year with DH and loved it but too soon for a return visit.
My geography is awful. Where is Stanford?
Think Norwich is a little too far. Too scared to do London alone Blush

Chester for lovely shops & cafes plus a few small galleries, with a day trip to Liverpool for the fantastic larger galleries & museums.

Allinafankle · 04/08/2015 20:21

Liverpool. Fab place for a couple of days!

mrsdavidbowie · 04/08/2015 20:22

Leeds?

Lunastarfish · 04/08/2015 20:25

Guildford is very quaint but a major town

overthemill · 04/08/2015 20:26

Paris

Oxford, had a blissful two days there on my own when DC's were younger

HoldMeDown · 04/08/2015 20:34

Ah I'd love to do this! DS is a bit too young yet and still on the boob... The minute he's off, so am I! Alone in a hotel room, reading, a bath all to myself. Shopping by myself too! Oh what bliss that would be...

MyPelvicFloorTrainsItself · 04/08/2015 20:39

Newcastle?

BeautifulBatman · 04/08/2015 20:41

Winchester
Lymington
Bath

Didiusfalco · 04/08/2015 20:51

York, definitely York. You could go down on the train, find a lovely b&b. You wouldnt need a car as loads of things within walking distance. Great shops, choice of museums, lots of history, lovely parks if the weather is nice. You could easily fill a few days.

ohidoliketobe · 04/08/2015 20:51

Harrogate? Nice day shopping and a visit to one of the spas

nmg85 · 05/08/2015 09:59

Stamford in in Lincolnshire about 20 minutes from Peterborough.

dlwelly · 06/08/2015 12:28

Oxford is lovely but would recommend driving rather than getting the train as there's lots to do that it's a little way out the centre!
