Anyone been to Uganda before? Any recommendations for places to visit? I'm going out there next year to work for a bit in a hospital and will have some free time for sightseeing.

Binka I lived in Kampala in 98 (seems like yesterday!) and had a great time, it is a very sociable and lively place.

As for sightseeing there are several places to visit upcountry, Queen Elizabeth Park is a good national park to check out as is Murchison where there is a fabulous waterfall. If trekking is your thing you can trek in the Rwenzori mountains in the west and depending on the security issues you can track gorillas too. You can also visit the tea estates in the west..

In fact there are plenty of other things to do and places to visit and plenty of people in Kampala who can advise and book for you the best lodges/campsites/transport options suitable for your budget and your interests.

What will you be doing in the hospital? Is it in Kampala itself?

Enjoy

I'll be in Rushere which is between Bwindi and Lake Mburo national park. Am very interested in seeing the gorillas and got an email today from UWA confirming permits! It'll be obstetrics I'll be doing while out there.

Am thinking of going to the Sessee (sp) islands as I've heard they're worth a visit. Don't think I'll have time to get up to Murchison (only going for 3 weeks) and I've heard the security situation there is a bit dodgy.

Am very excited about going.

That's great that you got gorilla permits, how exciting! We were never able to go as the security issues were too high at that time for us.

Lake Mburo is lovely and you should be able to get to QE quite easily if you are already in the west, Semliki is also worth a visit. Murchison is way too far away and as you say sometimes security can be bad up there.

We never went to Ssese Islands so would be interested to hear what you think of them if you get there.

Your work sounds interesting too, I am sure you will really enjoy yourself, Ugandans are so friendly and welcoming, 3 weeks will probably fly past.
