Hi we are driving from London to Montenegro (LOL) and planned to do an overnight trip to take in Venice with 10 and 13 year old. We thought we would need to stay in town outside and get the train in? Anyone done something similar?

You can park in a big multi-storey at Piazzale Roma on the edge of Venice and get the boat to the centre, but if that doesn't appeal then Verona is a lovely city with train links (about an hour and a quarter) to Venice so you could just go for the day. Make sure you get a train to Venice Santa Lucia, which is in the centre right on the Grand Canal, rather than Venice Mestre, which is on the mainland. Have a great trip!

If you're staying a night in Venice, definitely stay in the centre and park your car at Piazzale Roma, and either walk or jump on the water bus. We stayed there for 2 nights last year, following a stay at Lake Garda.

I was originally going to book just outside of Venice on the mainland but was advised not to - so glad we stayed on Venice!!

Piazzale Roma was 10-15 mins walk from our hotel, just be aware of cobbled streets and little bridges everywhere, if you have luggage.

Staying in the centre, especially at night, when all the day-trippers and cruisers have left, is just amazing!

The Venice advice was really helpful. Am not sure of the etiquette re saying thanks. Am v grateful so would rather let you know that not! DS came back from school trip to Spain minus his passport so booking this bit was delayed. Returned by coach company so back on track.
