Advice please: how to book a flight whilst passport renewal process is going on

Dd sent her passport off to be renewed a week ago ( she is 20). It will take another 2 weeks apparently. She now needs to urgently book return flights to a European city (for a music tour)in July - flights are nearly full for the relevant dates.

Is it generally possible to book flights using old/soon to be invalid passport details, then amend these details when new passport is issued? Websites no help at all .
This must happen frequently. Any advice would be much appreciated!

You can book flights without giving passport details but you can't check in without them online.

She doesn't need a passport to book travel. She will need it closer the time to check-in online. Some airline websites give the option to enter passport details at booking but it's not obligatory- best not to as it may be tricky to change.

I booked flights a few years ago when some of our families passports were still in date but some (including mine) weren't. I emailed them to ask if I shoul put in the passport information for the ones in date or wait until we had all passports and they said to wait and update when I had all passports. There was no problem making the booking without the valid passports.
