Buying a Return Ticket and only using the first bit...

I'm trying to buy a flight back to the Uk from Austria, but the single prices are about £500! If I make the trip a return one, the cost goes down to about £300.

Is it possible to buy it as a return, and only use the first half?

Can't see why not...what you can't do though is the other way round and just use the return half!!!

Yes, I beleive so.
Fly out, and then don't show for the return leg.

If you don't use the outward bound portion, they will invalidate the return - so make sure the return is Austria-UK (and not UK-Austria first)

I've done this several times (booking flights for employees) as it can save a lot of money.

I just search to see when the best price for the return flight is and though it's generally on a weekday, a few weeks later than the outward journey.

I've done that several times before with no intention of using the return ticket.

Thank you for all your replies. I had read that the airlines would come after you and charge you for the flight if you didn't turn up, but it seems madness not to take the chance and save so much money.

Why would airlines chase and "fine" you for the flight you haven't taken (but have paid for)? Confused

IDismyname · 22/04/2015 23:55

I mooched around Trip advisor and got that info there. Something to do with the fact that you were not adhereing to their T&Cs if you had purchased the ticket with the deliberate intention of not using the second half.

It seemed pretty stupid to me. peoples plans change, stuff happens. It must happen quite frequently.

I bought a return ticket to Turkey once as it was a lot cheaper than the one way. I just didn't show up for the return journey. They will know you aren't there when you don't check in.

If they don't want people doing that they shouldn't charge more for a one way than a single!

Christelle2207 · 23/04/2015 18:32

Yes. Definitely not the other way round though.

It used to be that on ferries they would charge you for the more expensive single if you didn't use your return portion, but i've never heard of it for plane journeys.
