Can you recommend a hotel for a 2 night romantic break (South East)?

DH and I have arranged 2 nights away together without children in early December and want to stay somewhere stylish and romantic. This will ideally be in a city or small town as we want to take advantage of being able to spontaneously go out to restaurants/bars etc. Malmaison in Oxford would have been ideal but it's full. Does anyone know about hotels in Cambridge? We want five star or exceptional 4 star or boutique style hotel. Thanks for any ideas.

Well if you don't want to be ripped off do not go to Mortons in Corfe in Dorset.
Sorry just needed that rant.

No real idea re hotels sorry.

We've recently stayed at the Vineyard at Stockcross which was great. We ventured into Newbury but not to eat as the restaurant at the hotel is excellent.

Is London an option?

Hotels in Cambridge are generally awful

Hotel Felix restaurant was good but seems to have gone downhill lately

Hotel Du Vin in Henley? I havn't been but the location is lovely (and you could easily visit Oxford too)

HDVs are all fully booked Looked at Garden Hotel (? I think) in Cambridge and they have Penthouse suite available but tripadvisor describes it as a business hotel and we don't want that.

I haven't been to the Garden House Hotel but I remember we regularly put up business people there visiting when I worked in Cambridge so it probably isn't what you are looking for. I can't really think of any boutique type hotels in Cambridge.

there is the university arms, not sure what it's like, the garden house is quite weddingy and conferencey. There isn't really many nice places to stay.. Newmarket is only 10 miles up the road, or you could try swynford paddocks, just outside cambridge, in six mile bottom

What about this ?

Or I understand Reading is the place to go at the moment - I come from there and find it difficult to believe but they have really changed the town centre and I think there is loads to do. What about The Forbury Hotel

Not South East but South - Chewton Glen is absolutely exceptional. Treat yourself - you know you deserve it!

Whatley Manor is absolutely lovely and very luxurious!! We had a fantastic and very romantic time there earlier this year.
