Are $50 bills a problem for tourists in the USA?

I ordered some holiday cash online from the Post Office. I asked for mixed bills but they've mostly sent $50 bills. I read a bit in the 'rough guide to California' that said petrol stations won't accept $50 bills in case they're fakes and then saw a bit on tripadvisor from a couple of years ago where someone had a problem trying to pay a hotel bill with $50 notes.

I thought this sounded a bit extreme but then remembered handing over a £50 note a few years back in Superdrug as payment for a £25 spend and the cashier acted as if it was monopoly money and embarrassed me by shouting across the shop to the manager 'can we accept this?' (to her credit manager replied, 'of course we accept them, they're cash!')

Anyway, just wondered if anyone's been to USA on holiday recently or any mn'ers in the US who are in the know on this? If they're a problem I will take them to the Post Office in town and see if they will change them for lower denominations.

I dont think they are a problem. But have your credit card ready just in case.

Hi
We were in Florida recently and our cash was mostly in $50 bills. We had no problem using them in supermarkets, restaurants etc.
I think you'll be grand

I'm American. It's true that a lot of smaller businesses won't take larger bills, both for counterfeit concerns and because they can deplete their smaller bills needed for change. Larger concerns, like hotels, grocery stores, etc. will take them. You should not have a problem, but if you do, you can go into any bank in the US and get them changed.
