Accommodation tips in Japan please!

Hi, we're off to Japan in the summer with our toddler and baby. We're so excited! We're actually going to visit my niece but plan to travel around Japan along the way.

Does anyone have any tips on family places to stay in the following place: Tokyo, Kyoto and Hiroshima?

We are happy to stay in Ryokans as the sleeping arrangement is ideal as the kids usually sleep in bed with us (no danger of falling off the bed) but equally happy with western style hotels. The main thing is budget. Accommodation just seems to horrifically expensive! Also, any tips on location would be good. In Tokyo, I think we have narrowed it down to Shibuya. Has anyone tried Airbnb in Japan? My concern is that we turn up and the hosts let us down or it isn't as we expected. Not an issue if we didn't have kids but we will have a 3yo and 1yo and think it will be too stressful if we end up in that situation.

Any other tips in general would be very welcome.

Many thanks in advance!

x

Have used flipkey (part of the trip advisor website) to book a traditional house in Kyoto. Probably cheaper than a hotel and more space for baby and toddler to nap.

Thanks ShanghaiDiva I didn't know about Flipkey so that it useful. Definitely agree that it will be cheaper than a hotel so is something I will explore. Flipkey seems to be similar to Airbnb though. My concern is if the arrangement falls through! I know I won't lose the money as TripAdvisor will hold it in escrow until I check in but if the hosts cancel and we turn up without a place! Perhaps I'm worrying unnecessarily. Still going to check it out!
