Hello,

First trip up to York and the surrounds, driving so distance no issue. Looking for recommendations on what to do in the area.

  • activities for kids (7 & 10)?
  • great walks?
  • pub dinners?
  • afternoon teas?
  • villages to visit ?

thx

York castle museum is good for kids and cliffords tower which is next to it.
On a nice day a walk on the walls is nice.
The railway museum is worth a visit (and free) but obviously only if you like trains!
The Yorvik centre and DIG is really popular. Ques are normally huge in peak times so pre-book if you can.

Can't really advise on the rest but DS (10) loved the castle museum and the Yorvik viking centre.

We went to Piglets adventure farm last year - it's about 8 miles from York City centre if I remember rightly. My children were 2 & 4 at the time so not sure if yours would enjoy it as much but there's lots to do - farm animals, nature walk, tractor rides, pedal go carts, ride on tractors, crazy golf, bouncy pillow/castles, a maize maze (in summer), play park - all of that is free once you've paid to go in. Also there is a gorgeous farm shop and cafe which sells delicious food. Can't link as I'm on phone but if you google piglets adventure farm it comes up with the website for the farm shop (the farmers cart?) and you can find the farm bit on there.

  • National Railway Museum is free to get in and a good day out.
Take a picnic to the Museum Gardens and play spot the squirrel Grin
  • (If you look closely you can see them scampering up the trees.)
Lovely on a nice warm day.

  • The York Chocolate Story (all about the history of chocolate in York, and you can get to make your own choc bar amongst other stuff)
You can read about what a day out there is like here familyfriendlywestyorkshire.wordpress.com/?s=york+chocolate+story

Flamingo Land theme park isn't far from York and great fun.
