... take 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids) on holiday to the Canaries for 2 weeks over Christmas? I don't want to go anywhere grotty, but am not expecting 5 star luxury.

TIA

Christmas is always very expensive wherever you want to go, I have looked at it a few times but the cost has always been prohibitive!

Hersetta427 · 25/03/2015 16:47

nice all inclusive - around $4-5k I would say. Obviously if you went self catering it would be cheaper.

Egypt tends to be cheaper than the canaries and the weather is better too.

Teletext holidays have 2 weeks AI at this hotel
Be Live Grand Teguise Playa Hotel
for £479 each leaving on the 14th Dec
Loads more on then

Hersetta427 · 25/03/2015 19:02

I only looked at prices from 19/th dec after the schools have broken up.

nannyafrica · 25/03/2015 21:54

The children I nanny for break up on the 11th !

Hersetta427 · 26/03/2015 08:39

Would that be a private school though as I know they break up earlier. My daughter breaks up on Friday 18th.

nannyafrica · 26/03/2015 09:51

Yes private school, they have also got 4 weeks off now for Easter!

CleansingSurfaceWipes · 26/03/2015 11:08

Blimey that is a lot of money.

Thank you all very much for your replies.

Kids are at a state school but I'm not averse to taking them out a few days early (but that's an entirely different thread)

My main concern is to get some winter sunshine for mental and physical health. I'm not so keen on the idea of going to Egypt. Any other ideas for winter sunshine?

Many thanks again.

What about Marrakesh if you are up for an adventure , we were there the week before xmas this year and loved it. Flight around £100 return easyjet and stay in a raid like this one; Riad Hcekarram they have this room 1 × Joliana Triple Room was
£1,025 now £547 for all 4 of you. 18th until the 1st.
When there you could do a 3 day trip to the desert or the coast.

Hersetta427 · 26/03/2015 14:31

Cape Verde islands (nr the azores) has yr round temps of 29 degrees. Won't be any cheaper though. Xmas is often more expensive then school summer holidays. We have been on 6 Xmas holidays (twice to the Dom Rep, twice to thee Maldives and twice to Egypt).

CleansingSurfaceWipes · 27/03/2015 09:21

nannyafrica, that's a good idea. Do you think it would be OK with primary-school-age kids?

Hersetta Caoe Verde islands sound amazing. Definitely look expensive though...

Thank you again for the ideas.

We saw lots of kids there having a great time at night in the main square. If you want spotless clean streets this is not the place for you, it is an adventure and some of the narrow streets can get busy. We ate food in the main square every night. You can get a car or bus to Essaouira and spent time on the coast and/or in to the desert. We did need a jumper in the morning and at night but in the day we had t-shirt on.
You could youtube Marrakesh to see what its like. There are so many raids to choose from but we like to be next to the main square rather then in the new town.

We were in Boa Vista (Cape Verde) last Christmas and the weather was ok but very over cast and windy, which is what Cape Verde is known for.
So it wasn't great on the beach, yet I love it there, on Boa Vista there isn't anything to do really except be in the hotel, the day trips are dire!
