You'll be fine doing this outside of school holidays but there isn't much discounted stuff in school holidays as everyone wants it or in fact would be prepared to buy it. You really are limited to the the really grotty or things like cruises that have already got their quota of children and just want adults.

The main problem with last minute holidays is the travel - with flights in particular. They go up and up whilst hotels and apartments get cheaper and cheaper.

If you can't afford a " proper" holiday have a look at going away on alternative holidays. Book cheap flights now and accommodation later ( Tuesday flights are cheap) for short breaks rather than weeks. Euro tunnel is cheap if you don't mind driving abroad, Look to off season places ie Rome in August, rainy season destinations.

agree with revealall. easy to do if outside school hols but in school hols then just forget it really. the best advice a travel agent friend gave me was that the last minute holidays were actually the ones no one else wanted and you have to ask why! if you cant afford top prices then you need to book earlier not later if its school hols.

If you are prepared to diy , look at the last week or so of August by which time most of Europeans have gone back to school and use international sites to book ie. Pierre et Vacances, Interhome or go direct to the campsites with mobile homes or local tourist office. Some but not all will only accept weekend to weekend bookings in peak season. Ferry can be cheaper than flying or tunnel even if you book late, or you can use Tesco vouchers etc.
