Where can I go for a short break and feel safe as a lone tourist?

I haven't travelled alone really, but did holiday as a lp with young DS a few times.

Generally I felt 'safe' in places which were family orientated.

Not everyone's cup of tea -but we went to Costa Teguise a couple of times, Los christianos, Salou and Calella. All were quite busy - with a lot of families, many British.

Whereabouts do you fancy/

I,ve travelled lots alone.

City trips are always good if for the first time.

Just google solo travel. It will get you fired up Grin

If you are careful and cautious you can go to most places. I have been to New York and Singapore for work but stayed longer and had free weekends and enjoyed myself.

I try to get hotels which are big enough to have a restaurant and spa/pool so I don't have to venture out in the evening.

I would avoid "Macho-cultures" and Middle East on my own though, the difference in attitude against woman is too strong for me.

I didn't like Costa Teguise. It is very spread out, doesn't have a centre or a harbour and is totally devoid of any character.

Strangely, I felt very safe in Florence. I know that they have a pick pocket problem, but we weren't targeted as we didn't look vulnerable.

Any town on Lake Garda.

Closer to home I would recommend Sark. No traffic, hardly any crime and absolutely beautiful.

Loads of places - are you looking for beach, city break, what sort of thing?

DD1 went to Athens alone this year (she's 18). Loved it. People friendly, safe, easy.

kiwibella · 13/03/2015 18:37

thank you!
I fancy hot (ok, realistically warm) and sitting by a pool, dipping in the sea.
I did think about sightseeing in Italy too- realise this doesn't fit into my weather criteria for this time of yearSmile

I spent three weeks alone in Turkey and had a wonderful time. I started in Istanbul then went to Pammukale (stunning) and Cappadocia (magical). I did it pretty much as a backpacker and felt very safe.

Malta feels very safe. Still a very catholic country with low crime rates. Also Croatia especially the islands. Oddly maybe, Northern Ireland especially outside Belfast in small provincial towns and the countryside. I’d also list Madrid ( obviously be sensible and don’t wonder off dark streets alone at night, as in any city).

North of Tenerife? I stayed in Puerto de la Cruz with friends but as a regular solo traveller thought that was somewhere I would happily go back to alone.

Playa Blanca in Lanzarote could work.

Seville.
