San Francisco car rental

Anyone recommend a company for car rental in July - from San Fran city, not the airport as we will spend a couple of days in SF first.

I expect they are mostly the same but in case any are nicer to deal with than others or vice versa.

Should I arrange from UK? Is a credit card essential?

yes and yes to the last two. Been a while, but unless it has changed as a Brit you need lots of extra insurance that the Yanks will have anyway. Buying it from the UK is massively cheaper.

Also parking is a real pain in SF.

But seeing Dh pretending to be Steve McQueen in Bullit was priceless

First chance to get back on here! Thanks you two for your advice. Any preference for a particular company to book through?

been too long for that, I'm afraid - but it looks like you can do a comparison on kayak or similar travel sites.

We found Alamo very cheap! Also I second the warning about parking! We got a ticket for being too far away from the curb Hmm

The buses are very efficient though if you decided against car hire!

It's been a while since I was last in the US, but we have always used Alamo. We ran into a deer in Yosemite - the deer was OK but the car was damaged. As we had CDW Alamo were not the least bit concerned.

Ditto, not needing a car while in SF. You either walk or use public transport.

And yes, you need a credit card.
