Would you stay in KL or is there a good beach place within striking distance that you'd recommend? Any other tips please?

definitely a day out to the Batu Caves (assuming it is not festival time)

another day exploring the central historical bit. Petronas Towers, also the local bits of jungle. But don't pick up dengue like we did...

it is 3 hours to the nearest beach.

Second the Batu recommendation. We also really liked the Minara Tower (sorry spelling may be wrong!). Much much better views than up the Petronas Towers. Highly recommended the at Traders hotel. Amazing rooftop bar and pool. Also did some sort of mini jungle trek when we were there. Wish I could remember more but was a while ago. We went to the Perenthian Islands which are beautiful but not a short journey I don't think.

We found the little tourist information office (eventually) near the main train station and booked a few inexpensive trips. One was a tour including Batu caves and some local craft sites, another was a trip out to a nature park (jungle) - there was just us, pretty much in a taxi with a very chatty and helpful guide, and another way out into the countryside to see the fireflies along a river. No idea of names, this was 12 years ago. We went up the Petronas towers and spent the rest of the time soaking up the street atmosphere and cooling off in the malls. Loved KL, one of my favourite places, because of the atmosphere, the food, all the friendly people.

I have no idea, but I feel the need to say dont go to any discos or you may lose your jumper.

Traders is a great hotel, fantastic views over the towers and YY to the rooftop pool and bar. It is worth upgrading to an exec room too to get the evening buffet and free wine and cocktails.
Batu caves is worth a trip - do it on a local bus too, it makes it more fun. Night markets are good for street food and tat stalls. The butterfly garden is wonderful. Firefly boats is a trip I would reccomend (I dont do trips but it was great fun- take mosquito repellant). Both the Petronas and the Telecom tower are worth a go if there are no queues.

KL is a lovely city with lots of hidden gems.

Orange executive room with free buffet and drinks?!! Nobody told me that though it was years ago!! We only paid £45 B&B per night so upgrading wouldn't have broken the bank!!
