Anyone had a weekend in Reykjavik?

I'm planning a weekend in October/November (no kids, just DH & me) and looking for advice on places to stay (fairly cheap but nice), where to go and what to see. I'll book the flights soon to get a good price and then worry about the details. Any tips gratefully accepted.

We had a great time - went for 3 days.

The day we arrived we went straight to the blue lagoon, the next day we did the golden circle tour which is a must (visit volcanoes, waterfalls, guysers). Next day we did a whale watching tour, then flew home. We didn't stay in reykjavik we stayed in Keflavik. We had a lovely time.

Thank you. Did you hire a car or use public transport?
Also, did you see the Northern Lights?
:)

We've just returned from a few days in Reykjavik - we LOVED it! We stayed in Reykjavik4u apartments and they were fab, really central, clean, modern, wifi etc.
Would second the Blue Lagoon and Golden Circle recommendations above.

Sadly we didn't see the northern lights (too cloudy), but if you want to have a chance of seeing those you will need to get out of the city (too much light), either on a tour or by renting a car.

Lastly, don't underestimate the cold - especially the wind chill which is brutal!

No northern lights for us either. We got taxi's to the blue lagoon and the golden circle tour picked us up from our hotel and the whale tour was walking distance so we didn't need a car.

We did a long weekend in Reykjavik ( 4 girls). Rented an apartment through airbnb ( lady was called Oddny) which was fantastic ( location wise and facilities). We hired a car and did all the driving ourselves ( golden circle, blue lagoon) No NL as too cloudy.

I've been twice. Stayed in the Centerhotel Thingholt the first time and the Centerhotel Arnarhvoll the second time. Both nice enough, the Thingholt was the better of the two but the Arnarhvoll was really well priced. We did tours on a coach the first time and hired a car the second. Really useful having the car but be aware that the weather can change really rapidly and be really quite extreme, especially the wind. Just this week 500 people got stranded along the Golden Circle route due to the weather. We used this website www.vegagerdin.is/english to monitor the road conditions and en.vedur.is/ to monitor the weather. Still managed to get caught up in a terrifying snow storm on the mountain roads between Selfoss and Reykjavik though that ended up closing the road. On the bright side their main roads are constantly monitored and snow ploughs etc seem to be sent out really quickly. I'd recommend the drive along the south coast to Vik too or the south shore adventure if you go on a coach tour. Really beautiful and there's a little cafe right down on the black sand beach that does lovely soup with an awesome view. I think it's called the Black Beach.
