We're looking to book a holiday for end-June/ beg July 2015 and am starting to panic a bit, as we can't seem to find anything that works for our family. DH gets bored if he has to sit in one place for too long, I don't like being rushed off my feet on holiday and DD is an only child and hence is hard work to engage.

  • we're easy on destination, pretty much most places in Asia, Middle East (not Dubai) or Europe (not UK or France) will do us
  • We aren't adventure holiday sorts, a nice (but not too posh) resort or hotel would be ideal: self catering, AI, half board anything is fine
  • We don't do 'fly and flop' sort of holidays. Don't like rush rush rush sort either. A mix of some days at the hotel and some day trips would be ideal.
  • We have a 7 year old little girl, who has discovered the concept of being bored! So a kids club or similar would be great.
  • Budget-wise we would prefer cheap but for the right place, willing to go the extra mile.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

What about a cruise? There is always lots to do for the kids and you can relax if you want or go ashore and explore. Cruises are well designed to suit all ages

ShoutyMom · 03/03/2015 17:01

We have done only one cruise (UK-Norway), which was a bit of a damp squib. There was plenty to do on ship, but the shore excursions were largely miss-able (except the bus ride up the mountains to see the fjords), some of the seaside towns were fairly nondescript, could have been anywhere in the UK.
In that sense I think a cruise would suit the fit and flop style more - don't really get to see new places.
Thanks gabs, I don't mean to be difficult, it's just a tricky one!

We actually found a place that suited us really well in Tenerife - www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g1940742-d622681-Reviews-Regency_Country_Club-Chayofa_Arona_Tenerife_Canary_Islands.html.

DS is an only but doesn't like big kids clubs, but they have a nice little one that runs in the morning where he can dot in and out of and usually make some friends. I like to relax by the pool whilst DH goes off and has tennis lessons. There are excursions to be had to Mount Teide, or body boarding at the beach, or a day trip to the water park.

There's maybe not enough to do or see for you, but it's just a suggestion.

Thanks rookie, reading reviews now, fingers crossed!

Somewhere else that might suit is somewhere that has been highly recommended to us which is Croatia. I'd imagine there would be lots to see, but equally some nice looking beaches around - not sure about kids clubs though.

Or KinderHotels in Austria and I think Germany might work - lots of activities for children and walking and sightseeing for adults.

Our main problem at that time of year is everywhere is too hot for us apart from France.

Is your DD a water baby? We took DD to Jungle Aqua Park, Hurghada, Egypt for the first time when she was 7 and she loved it so much we went back the following year! We went in Aug and it was ridiculously hot, but Jun/Jul would be better. We took 3 days out whilst there to fly back up and do the Pyramid etc, and did other diving/snorkelling and historic trips the next year.

Otherwise Holiday Village Manar in Tunisia was a hit too for the kids club and evening entertainment, as was Louis Phaethon Beach Hotel in Paphos

Thanks rookie and Eve, jumping on to tripadvisor now! Not too sure about Egypt with everything that's going on.

Mauritius?
Great hotels for relaxing, water sports, snorkeling, evening entertainment. Island small enough to visit a few intetesting places within short distances.

MistletoeBUTNOwine · 04/03/2015 06:05

Malta is lovely.
We've just booked for June Smile

ShoutyMom · 04/03/2015 06:38

Mauritius and Malta both sound good!

Mistletoe, where are you staying? Are you travelling with kids?

EveDallas - I just read the FCO advice on travel to Egypt, seems we are ok to go to the tourist areas. Would you mind sharing your itinerary and also what hotels you stayed at?

Hi Shouty. We stayed in Hurghada at the Jungle Aqua Park Hotel. We were perfectly safe and didn't even hear about the trouble in 2012 until we got home! In 2013 we saw fighter jets going over (Hurghada Airport is shared with the military) but again felt perfectly safe.

The first year we did Cairo and Luxor with an overnight through Memphis Travel. We stayed at the St George Hotel in Luxor. They were very good and v professional and the tour guide stayed with us throughout. We did think they were more expensive that some others, but decided it was worth it for extra 'safety' m.memphistours.co.uk/Egypt/Excursions-And-Attractions/Hurghada-Excursions/Two-Day-Tri-to-Cairo-and-Luxor-by-flight

The second year we booked our trips with gotohurghada.net gotohurghada.weebly.com we had booked a private transfer with them before we first travelled and they saved us a good hour of waiting around time in the passport queue. The hotel itself has a good excursions 'shop' but goto were cheaper. Saying that, friends that used the hotel team were very impressed too.

We did Luxor by coach (was actually a small minibus), diving in Makadi Bay and an afternoon/evening desert trip.

Thanks Eve, need to start planning and booking now!
