Car seat for the plane?

I recently just booked a holiday to Portugal with jet2. On the confirmation it says I can't check in online before the trip I must do this at the airport because a member of staff must check my 16 month old (will be 20 months when we go) is strapped in to a suitable seat. We were told when we made the booking he won't have his own seat. So now I'm slightly confused, does he need to be in a car seat to go or just sit on our lap?

Seems very odd maybe a mistake- think you need to call jet 2. When i've flown with my under 2 he has gone on my knee. I have checked in a car seat and buggy but that's a bit different.

Under 2 sit on knees

This is what the confirmation says.

What it means is that they will check you in so they can ensure that you aren't in one of the seats near the emergency exit or anything.

If you have not purchased an extra seat, your dc will be on your lap with an extension seat belt.

Under 2 will sit on your lap, but what they are saying is that they want to make sure you don't check yourself into the emergency exit row (you must be an 'able bodied passenger' who can open the door in the event of an evacuation) or another seat which is inappropriate to seat a parent and baby in (for instance, on many passenger aircraft their are 4 oxygen masks overhead a row of 3 seats. You can have 3 passengers and one baby on a lap in a row, but not 2 babies on laps as there would not be enough oxygen masks in an emergency.) So by suitable seat they are talking about a suitable position on the plane, not that you have brought a car seat with you!

Ok. Thanks very much
