Marrakech

A few weeks ago, in a crazy moment, when exh announced he was having the kids for a week in July...I booked flights to marrakech. I know it's going to be insanely hot...I'm good with heat, so that's not an issue. I've booked an all inclusive hotel out of town for half the week, and then a Riad for the other half, and I'm taking the long suffering boyfriend.

Anyone been and got any good hints and tips?

Thanks

Xx

which all-inclusive? we stayed at the Rui Tikida Palmeraie and thoroughly enjoyed the contrast between the calm of time by the huge pool with the wonderful madness of the city
loved the Majorelle Gardens, obviously the souk and the Djemma el fna and if I was going for two weeks id also take a trip to the Atlas mountains

Thank you! That's the all inclusive I've booked :) x

I loved Marrakech. My top tips are:

  1. Consign yourself to drinking mint tea. You'll be offered it in lots of places and its considered rude to refuse.
  2. Don't be afraid to get lost in the souks, it's no problem to pay a few dirham's to a local to lead you back to the main square.
  3. You'll be expected to haggle over things you buy.
  4. Try the prickly pears that the street venders sell in the main square, they're delicious. The orange juice is amazing too.
  5. Take a day trip to the atlas mountains in a grand taxi (like a shared large taxi). It's much cooler and very beautiful, and jot that far.

Hope you have an amazing time!

Can't think of any tips at the moment but just wanted to say how jealous I am! Marrakech is the most amazing place and I would love to go again!

I'm good with heat but we went in July (and stayed at the other riu hotel!) and it was utterly unbearable in the city. Almost 50 degrees. We got lost one day and I nearly cried as it was near impossible to do much more than short trips of walking around.

Plus you need to be covered which is the last thing you want in that heat. It's also Ramadan then and we found that tempers were short as the locals were hungry and tired.

Other than that, loved the majorelle gardens, a lovely oasis at that time of year.

I'm pretty sure I stayed at a Rui hotel but can't remember which one. It was very nice though.

Thanks , we are going after Ramadan. For the second half of the week we've booked a very luxurious riad in the city with air con in order to do short excursions out. I've also contacted a project there where I'm hoping to deliver an arts session and meet some locals, so im excited about that!

That sounds like a lovely way of doing it - enjoy Smile

If you are into food, try and get out to La Pause, it's a really glam oasis restaurant. The food is ace and it's the kind of place they shoot fashion editorials in. Very atmospheric.

Not all that easy to get to, it's about an hours drive out of Marrakech, if you call them they can sort a taxi, but you get to drive out to the mountains and dunes.
