South of France

Are we mad to go to South of France in the first two weeks of July-will it be chaos on the roads?
We aren't driving there but will be hiring a car for getting about. We have been to the area twice but in the pre DC school days so we always would go in June or September.

1st two weeks in July is school holidays, so it'll be fairly busy, but the worst is definitely August. Depends on where you're staying though....if you're around saint tropez / Cannes / fréjus it'll be busy, come a little bit away from the coast and the fashionable resorts, and it'll be quieter

Have a look at Bison Fute - a French website (available in English) which tells of bad days to travel & all general road info:

We have been to the south of France hiring a car for the past three years in August.
We have had absolutely no problems with traffic at all.
